Grimsby Town Star Linked With League Two Switch

Grimsby Town could be set to lose star player Denver Hume to a fellow League Two side this summer, after a move elsewhere would open up the funding required to try and complete a deal.

The 28-year-old was a standout performer for David Artell’s side last season as they narrowly missed out on a place in the League Two play-off places last season.

Hume is not under contract at Grimsby Town for next season so is likely to be the subject of a summer departure as interest in him continues.

Hume linked with Grimsby exit

As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Grimsby Town defender Denver Hume is a target for League Two rivals Fleetwood Town, ahead of a potential move this summer.

Fleetwood finished slightly lower in the division last season but are likely to be in the market for a left-sided player, following the reveal that Phoenix Patterson is closing in on a permanent move to League One side Stevenage for a six-figure fee.

Unfortunately for Mariners fans, their star player is not under contract with the club for next season and his current deal expires in less than two weeks time, meaning it would be a free transfer.

How did he fare last season?

After a quiet 2023/24 campaign, making just 18 first-team appearances across spells with Portsmouth and Grimsby, Hume was a regular once again last season.

He featured in 45 of Grimsby’s 46 league matches and made two additional appearances in cup competitions.

During that time, Hume provided a draw-dropping 14 assists, which is more than he has managed in his entire career combined thus far.

How big of a blow would this be for Grimsby?

Hume is out of contract this summer and is yet to sign a contract extension with the Mariners, which heavily suggests that he will be moving on this summer.

Therefore, regardless of where he goes – it would be a big hole that needs filling in terms of a left-sided player as well as finding the goal contributions next time around.

Grimsby have already secured the signing of Spennymoor Town defender Reece Staunton who plays in the same position as Hume.

However, it will be seen as a bigger blow to the Mariners if Hume moved to a direct League Two rival.
