Hartlepool United manager Nicky Featherstone has clarified the situation regarding current trainee Callum Cooke, amidst speculation that he could make a permanent return to the National League side.

The Pools are currently sitting just outside of the play-off places and continue to pick up momentum and confidence, whilst closing the gap on seventh-placed side Southend United to just four points.

Their play-off aspirations could have been set for a major boost, with the return of one of their former playmakers, but all is not as it seems.

Hartlepool manager clarifies trainee situation

During an interview with the Hartlepool Mail, manager Nicky Featherstone revealed that Callum Cooke was training with the National League side, but it was only as a favour, and there was no intent to do a deal between the two parties.

Cooke has been without a club since leaving fellow National League side Morecambe in the summer, where he was unable to help keep the club in the EFL.

Similarly, with Hartlepool chasing a potential play-off campaign this season, fresh from their takeover, the return of Cooke could have been the icing on top of the cake – but this has been the recipient of cold water provided by the club’s manager.

On Cooke, Featherstone stated…

‘Callum is a good friend of mine. He’s wanting to go abroad, so it was just a case of helping him get fit, nothing more than that.’

Similarly, Cooke himself appeared to pour cold water on the possible return by posting an update on his social media, stating…

‘Great to be back lacing up the boots again after the Xmas period… ready for the next challenge.’

Can Hartlepool press on with their top seven aspirations?

After an outstanding October-November spell for the club, Nicky Featherstone was rewarded with the role permanently. Since then, the club has gone four games without a victory across all competitions, including their shock exit from the FA Trophy.

However, victory over then-league leaders Rochdale has ended those woes, with the club up to ninth in the National League and closing the gap on the play-off places.

Between now and mid-February, Hartlepool have a favourable fixture list with clashes against three relegation-threatened sides including bottom side Gateshead. This period would represent an ideal time for the club to hit form, close the gap and potentially even rise into the top seven.

Whilst the January transfer window doesn’t necessarily apply to National League clubs (their window closes in March), the next few weeks will allow doors to open for some of their transfer targets, with the knowledge that those individuals can be replaced by their sides.

Whilst the addition of Callum Cooke would have brought some attacking depth and quality to the side, it’s unlikely that they will be short of options going into the next few weeks.

If the club can get the recruitment correct, take advantage of their upcoming schedule and make the most of their major morale boost, Hartlepool stand a strong chance of achieving a play-off spot this season.
