Huddersfield Town are set to add to a string of ambitious moves made under Lee Grant this summer, after agreeing a seven-figure deal with League One title holders Birmingham City, which would see talisman Alfie May make the switch to West Yorkshire.
According to reports from Football League World, Huddersfield have agreed a figure of £1.2 million for May, who will join the likes of Sean Roughan, Lynden Gooch and Marcus Harness through the door at the Accu Stadium.
The former-Charlton Athletic striker contributed 16 goals and eight assists towards Birmingham’s League One title claim, and has always proven a prolific figure at the third tier level.
He will be part of a significant turnover at Huddersfield Town this season, following a disappointing 2024-25 campaign that saw the club miss out on promotion places amid their relegation from the Championship.
Alfie May to Huddersfield Town
As previously mentioned, Lee Grant has made several excellent acquisitions this summer as he looks to oversee the Terriers’ return to the Championship.
Sean Roughan and Joe Low are well-regarded, young defenders at League One level, while more experienced figures in Lynden Gooch, Murray Wallace, and Marcus Harness have also committed to the project under Lee Grant.
A large player turnover was due after the club recently released nine senior team players, with the likes of Sorba Thomas, Danny Ward, and Matthew Pearson departing the club.
The signing of Alfie May brings a focal point to the Huddersfield Town attack, after the frontman has returned a consistently impressive goal output for Cheltenham Town, Charlton Athletic, and Birmingham City over the years.
However, this move is very much results-driven, with an eight-figure fee being paid for a 32-year-old, there will be a large onus on the striker maintaining his previous standards in a Terriers shirt.
On the player’s end, this transfer makes a great deal of sense for May, who will likely fall down the pecking order under Chris Davies as the club looks to be gearing for another promotion charge upon their return to the Championship.
Alfie May Figures in League One:
- 2024/25: 44 games, 16 goals, 8 assists.
- 2023-24: 43 games, 23 goals, 1 assist.
- 2022-23: 39 games, 20 goals, 3 assists.
- 2021-22: 46 games, 23 goals, 4 assists.
Can Huddersfield Town Achieve Promotion?
While Huddersfield’s recruitment this summer has been largely impressive, this is also a signing that could vastly improve players currently in the squad.
A recent title winner and a proven goal scorer at the level, May’s presence could hold a positive impact on the striking duo Joe Taylor and Dion Charles, who flattered to deceive after joining the West Yorkshire club in January.
However, despite poor starts to life with Huddersfield, the pair have proven to be prolific at League One level with Lincoln City and Bolton Wanderers, respectively.
While Grant is relatively unproven as a manager, his squad boasts a wealth of youth and experience, with a plethora of players proven in the division.
Alfie May will add greatly to the current list of profiles at the squad. It will be interesting to see how the club compete with the likes of Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle, and Cardiff City in what looks to be a contested race for promotion in the coming season.
