League One Huddersfield Town are aiming to win the race for National League talent Billy Whaite from Premier League Brentford, fellow third tier sides Blackpool and Wigan Athletic as well as Championship duo Stoke City and Hull City and League Two Fleetwood Town.
Lee Grant’s side have been ambitious in the transfer window this summer, they have added the likes of Alfie May, Sean Roughan and Marcus Harness amongst others.
The Terriers have won three of their opening four games (two in League One, one in the EFL Cup), but will have been disappointed to lose to Blackpool last time out. Despite an early goal, Blackpool scored three in 13 first half minutes and held on in the second half despite going down to 10 men.
This may not be the last time the two face off with each other, as both are linked to talented Morecambe youngster Billy Whaite.
Huddersfield Town Amongst Huge Group of Interested Clubs
Morecambe are a club in turmoil, their ongoing ownership issues have resulted in wages being paid late and a very public battle between parties. This has allowed players to give notice to leave due to their contract not being fulfilled, meaning that they can depart for nothing.
Billy Whaite is one such player, and with such a high ceiling, it has alerted clubs up and down the footballing pyramid. Huddersfield Town, Brentford, Blackpool, Wigan, Hull, Stoke and Fleetwood have all been mentioned as potential destinations for the youngster.
The striker is hopeful of securing a side with a clear pathway to the first team according to Alan Nixon. This could rule out Brentford, who have a longer route to first team football than the other clubs. Whaite is very much seen as a potential EFL star for the future. The chance to snap up up at such a young age for nothing could be appealing for all involved. With so many clubs interested it could be a difficult decision.
