League One Huddersfield Town have been on the look out for a new manager since the departure of Michael Duff earlier in the season.
Jon Worthington had been placed in interim charge until the end of the season but failed to grab the opportunity to be considered as the permanent boss with 10 defeats in 14 games.
Now the Terriers will look to appoint a new boss ahead of the summer transfer window opening, to allow him have a say on the makeup of the squad going into next season.
Huddersfield Town Turn to Familiar Face for Manager
Now, the League One side are reportedly set to offer the vacant position to former manager David Wagner.
The former Norwich boss was in charge of the club from 2015 to 2019 for over 150 games which included promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs in 2017.
His CV also includes Hoffenheim (at youth level), Borussia Dortmund II, FC Shalke and BSC Young Boys, who he lead in the Champions League including a notable 2-1 victory and a 1-1 draw over a Manchester United side that included David De Gea, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Now according to Alex Crook he is set to be offered the job.
Huddersfield Need to Rebuild
Huddersfield had hoped to follow in the footsteps of Birmingham City and return to the Championship at the first time of asking. But have struggled to seriously push for promotion for much of the season. They spent big money on the likes of Joe Taylor in the January transfer window but have been plagued by injuries and some unusual decisions behind the scenes including the appointment of Worthington as interim until the end of the season, despite there still being a chance of the play-offs at the time.
The League One Retained List released by the club does go some way to remove some of the enormous squad but there are still a number of players who are unlikely to be part of the plans going forward on the books. The club need to rip up their play book of the last year under Cartwright and start again and see what an experience manager can do with talented players such as Taylor.
