Hull City have taken a step closer in their ongoing interest in Dundee midfielder Josh Mulligan, ahead of a potential permanent swoop this summer.
The Tigers sent scouts to watch the midfielder in action during a recent Scottish Premiership clash against bottom-side St. Johnstone and remain interested in landing the player once his contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
According to a report via the Scottish Daily Record, Hull City remain interested in signing the midfielder in the summer due to him being available for a training compensation fee as a result of his contract coming to an end.
However, the Tigers aren’t the only side in England that are keeping tabs on Milligan’s future in the SPFL.
Tigers face Championship competition
Despite Hull City scouting the midfielder heavily in recent weeks, they aren’t the only Championship team that are interested in signing him this summer.
West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers are also monitoring the 22-year-old ahead of a potential switch to England.
News of second tier interest is likely to come as a further blow for Dundee who have already lost two players on pre-contract agreements already.
Lyall Cameron has joined SPFL giants Rangers whilst Jordan McGhee has opted for a fresh start with Motherwell.
How has he fared this season?
The 22-year-old has featured in 25 of Dundee’s 29 league appearances this season – starting 20 of them in total.
During that time, Mulligan has provided five assists for the SPFL side, including an assist against Aberdeen last month as well as an assist against Rangers.
Despite Dundee finding themselves 11th in the SPFL with just nine games to go, Mulligan has stood out in midfield, averaging 1.6 tackles, 4.4 ball recoveries and 1.5 clearances to match his goal contributions.
His strong defensive numbers suggest that he is an all-round midfielder and could flourish in a side containing higher quality of talent, which is what a move to the Championship would provide.
Is Hull the right move?
Location wise, Hull City is closer to Scotland than both Blackburn and West Bromwich Albion which could be a key factor.
Also, Hull are competing in the bottom end of the table which suggests that they could be likelier to hand Mulligan a better access to minutes. This would be boosted further if the Tigers were to make the narrow slip down to League One.
The Tigers boss has worked with plenty of younger players in his career thus far and could help to oversee Mulligan’s development further.
Hull City fans, what are your thoughts on this potential signing?
