Championship side Hull City have identified Reading boss Ruben Selles, former Birmingham City boss John Eustace, former Coventry City boss Mark Robins as well as Steven Schumacher, Alex Neil and Chris Hughton as potential options to take over as the club’s next manager according to reports.
It has been suggested that the second-tier side have received over 30 applications to date following the sacking of Tim Walter last week, with the club’s board keen to make a swift appointment.
According to Hull Live, the club have conducted six interviews of candidates so far, with discussions set to place over the week with the view to appoint a new manager before their fixture against Blackburn Rovers.
Hull City Manager Candidates
John Eustace
After being on the receiving end of one of the most disastrous decisions in EFL history, John Eustace has bounced back since he was sacked by Birmingham City and replaced by Wayne Rooney.
Once again, he has placed his side into contention for the play-offs occupying 8th place after 17 games.
There are question marks as to whether he would take the step from a promotion chasing side to one that is embroiled deep in a relegation battle.
Mark Robins
A club legend at Coventry City and had it been the decision of the fans would still very much be in charge of the club rather than Frank Lampard.
Despite a poor 24/25 campaign his stock still remains high after his achievements at the Championship side and would be a good pick up for an ambitious second tier side.
After so long at one club, it remains to be seen how ready he is to jump back onto the horse after such a short period of time off.
Steven Schumacher
Not that long ago Schumacher was one of the most in-demand bosses in the EFL due to his impressive spell with Plymouth Argyle, winning the League One title and Manager of the Year. However, his decision to make the move over to Stoke City was not one that proved to be successful and he will be looking for a position to once again prove his success wasn’t a flash in the pan.
Alex Neil
Neil along with the previous entry Schumacher have both got links to current Hull City head of recruitment Jared Dublin which could work in their favour when it comes to the latter stages of the process.
The Scottish manager is another who was last in work at Stoke City, having been sacked in December 2023 with the club 20th in the table.
He has a wealth of experience having managed Hamilton Academical, Norwich City, Preston North End and Sunderland before his time at the Potters.
Chris Hughton
Another manager with a wealth of experience, having most recently managed the Ghana national team until January of this year.
He has also managed Nottingham Forest, Brighton, Norwich, Birmingham, Newcastle and a caretaker spell at Tottenham Hotspur.
Ruben Selles
The final Hull City manager candidate on our list is Reading’s Ruben Selles.
The former Southampton man is performing miracles at the League One side, keeping his side competing with both arms tied behind his back, whilst the club tries to auction off his legs to pay the wages.
There is a deep sense of loyalty between the manager and the fans having been through so much together and it is unknown if he would depart mid-season as he has had plenty of opportunities to in the past.
Who Will Hull City Pick?
The best options of the group are arguably Selles and Eustace; however, it is unlikely Hull City will be able to persuade either to make the move at this stage of the season.
Neil and Schumacher have links to the current head of recruitment, but the best possible option, if they can convince him would be Mark Robins.
Not only is he a quality manager at Championship level, he also has what it takes to bring a club up from League One if the worst does happen.
