Championship side Hull City have sacked manager Rubén Sellés after narrowly avoiding relegation to League One on the final day.

This news comes as a shock after Rubén Sellés joined the club mid-season with the mission to ensure Hull City’s place in the second tier, which was confirmed with a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth, finishing 21st in the division.

Joining the club from Reading in December, Ruben Selles won nine of his 29 fixtures with the Tigers, claiming 34 points in their bid for eventual survival.

The statement published via Hull City’s official website also declares that assistant head coach James Oliver-Pearce has also left the club, alongside first-team coach Tobias Loveland.

Alongside the news, Hull City stated:

“Following a thorough review of football operations after a challenging campaign, the club feels a change in leadership is necessary to move the team forward in line with our ambitions.

“We would like to thank Rubén, James, and Tobias for their hard work and dedication during their time at the MKM Stadium and wish them well for their future careers.”

A Surprise Dismissal

Reports of this departure began to surface earlier last week, and has drawn many questions towards the ownership at Hull City.

Despite surviving by a bare thread, many will disagree with the manner of this sacking.

Sellés took charge of the club in December, on merit of his excellent performance with Reading, where he had the club on the cusp of the League One promotion battle amid financial uncertainty.

Upon making the move to the MKM stadium last winter, Hull City sat 22nd in the division with only three wins of their first 18 fixtures, on the back of nine games without a win under Tim Walter.

Coming into a relegation dogfight, Sellés had little room to implement any notable style or culture, with the objective simply set to keep the club in the division.

Having accomplished that on the back of his remarkable achievements with Reading in recent history, it is a shame to see that he will not receive the opportunity to build a side in his image this summer.

Managerial decisions creating controversy

This is not the first shock managerial departure at the MKM in recent history either, with Liam Rosenior’s parting last season coming as a shock after the East Yorkshire club fell narrowly short of the Championship play-off positions.

Ilicali’s takeover of the club in 2022 was well-received after the club and fanbase faced heavy division under the stewardship of the Allam family.

While ambitions and financial backing have not been questioned under the new ownership, three years into their acquisition of the club, inconsistencies in head coaches, play styles, and heavy player turnover are presenting difficulties for the club.

What next for Hull City?

Last summer presented a difficult challenge for Hull City, with star players such as Jacob Greaves and Jaden Philogene-Bidace departing the club, as well as loan stars Fabio Carvahlo and Tyler Morton returning to their parent clubs.

The side that threatened the Championship top six was ripped apart, alongside the dismissal of Liam Rosenior who lead the club to that position.

With the club looking set for another transitional summer, the board and players need to take a look at themselves.

While it is clear to see that the club need a cultural reset, the cut-throat nature with managers at Hull City is becoming a potential issue for the club.

To start moving forward, the next appointment will require a long-term vision if Hull City are to meet their ambitions to be at the top end of the division, or further inconsistency and constant player turnover could be the club’s downfall.
