Despite Hull City’s first-choice goalkeeper, Ryan Allsop, departing for Birmingham City in June, Hull are reportedly set to sanction the sale of his backup with Matt Ingram set for a medical at Oxford United.
Hull’s first-choice goalkeeper left for League One
Despite being Liam Rosenior’s number one for the majority of last season, goalkeeper Ryan Allsop finalised a move to recently relegated Birmingham City in June.
The fee The Blues paid for Allsop was undisclosed, but it was a shock move to many with the 32-year-old only signing for Hull in August of 2023 and performing amicably as Rosenior’s side just missed out on the play-offs, keeping ten clean sheets for The Tigers.
It is a sentimental move for Allsop though who remarked upon his transfer to Birmingham being a move to a club ‘very close to my heart’ revealing ‘I’m a boyhood Birmingham fan and as soon as I knew there was interest it was something I wanted to explore’. (BBC Sport)
Matt Ingram is set to finalise a deal with Oxford United.
Many Hull City fans wouldn’t have expected them to sanction the sale of their number two so quickly after Allsop’s departure, but it appears as though Ingram is heading to Oxford.
The report comes from Pete O’Rourke who claims The U’s have agreed a deal with Hull over the transfer of Ingram with the player set for a medical within the next twenty-four hours.
Ingram would offer the newly promoted Oxford United some stability and Championship experience having featured eight times for Hull in the league last season as well as being a part of Luton Town’s 2021/22 play-off push after joining the Hatters on an emergency loan deal.
Oxford United, who became part of the 24/25 Championship through the play-offs, have been left with an issue in between the sticks after Chelsea loanee, Jamie Cumming returned to Cobham, leaving a 35-year-old Simon Eastwood as the only goalkeeper for manager Des Buckingham to pick from.
The switch to Oxford United ends Ingram’s five-year stay with Hull where he racked up 111 appearances, with Oxford likely being his first experience being a club’s number-one ‘keeper since 2020/21.
New Tigers manager, Tim Walter, clearly rates 21-year-old Thimothee Lu-Tutala
The sales of Allsop and Ingram will leave new Hull City manager, Tim Walter, with former Spurs academy product, Thimothee Lu-Tutala being the German’s remaining choice in between the sticks.
21-year-old Lu-Tutala spent the second half of the season on loan with Doncaster Rovers, impressing fans, despite Rovers falling short of promotion.
Hull are still likely to purchase a new goalkeeper after the two exits leaving them light in goal, but Ingram’s imminent sale is likely to plunge them into a worse negotiation position with any club Hull looks to buy from aware of The Tigers’ desperation.
