England’s awful time in India continued as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, following their 4-1 victory in the T20Is.
Since Brendon McCullum was appointed head coach across all three formats, England have lost five out of six games and have looked significantly average compared to the Indian side.
The visitors batted first and got off to a good start with Phil Salt and Ben Duckett both batting well but a mix-up caused Salt to be run out and the wickets continued from there.
They fell from 75/0 to 111/4 before fifties from captain Jos Buttler and young all-rounder Jacob Bethell helped them recover slightly and they ended up 248 all out in 47.4 overs.
Harshit Rana, on his ODI debut, and Ravindra Jadeja both took three wickets for India.
After losing both openers quickly, the home side’s chase was led by their middle-order of Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel who all made half-centuries.
They reached their target with 11.2 overs and four wickets remaining, as Adil Rashid and Saqib Mahmood both picked up two wickets.
The second game of the series gets underway on Sunday 9 February at 08:00 GMT.

51 (64), 1/18 off 3 overs; impressed with a battling innings to record his second ODI fifty and played a big role in England getting close to 250 as wickets fell around him. Also got the breakthrough with the ball by getting Iyer lbw after a 94-run partnership for the third wicket
7. Liam Livingstone – 2/10
5 (10), 0/28 off 5 overs, 1 catch; a really poor tour for him so far. Unnecessarily charged down the wicket and edged behind when his side were in a poor position and needing a big partnership. Ineffective with the ball and caught Sharma early on

8 (16), 2/49 off 10 overs; bowled well and took the wickets of Patel with a beautiful leg-spinner and Rahul with a caught and bowled. Has shown throughout the tour that he’s still good enough despite turning 37 soon
10. Jofra Archer – 6/10

5. Axar Patel – 8/10
52 (47), 1/38 off 7 overs; came in after Iyer’s quick-fire innings and continued the quick run-scoring and combined with Gill for 92. Got the wicket of Buttler when he top-edged the ball to short fine leg

2 (9), 2 catches, 1 stumping; got out quickly but his dismissal didn’t have much effect on the game as they only needed 24 more runs
7. Hardik Pandya – 4/10
9* (6), 0/37 off 7 overs, 1 catch; no wickets with the ball but wasn’t that expensive. Came in when Rahul got out and helped them to victory. Caught Buttler off Pandya
