India v England 5th T20I – Player Ratings

Cricket

England suffered their biggest ever T20 defeat as India hammered them by 150 runs in the fifth and final match against India in Mumbai.

After the hosts had already won the series following the fourth game in Pune, Jos Buttler’s side were searching for a consolation victory but came away in an even worse state.

India opener Abhishek Sharma’s crucified the England bowlers as he hit 135 off 54 balls, breaking Shubman Gill’s record T20I score of 126 for an Indian batter, and taking his side to 247/9.

Four of the visitors’ six bowlers conceded more than 13 runs per over, with Durham fast-bowlers Brydon Carse and Mark Wood the only bright sparks as they took 3/38 and 2/32.

Shivam Dube hit a quick-fire 30 off 13 balls but Abhishek did nearly all of the damage as he helped his team race to 143/2 off the first 10 overs.

England opener Phil Salt was the only batter to put up a fight with 55 off 23 balls as Jacob Bethell (10) was the only other player to reach double-figures.

The Indian bowlers shared the wickets around but Mohammed Shami was the standout with 3/25.

England will now look for revenge in the three-match ODI series which starts on Thursday 6 February, as Joe Root joins up with the squad amidst calls for him to return to the T20 side.

Here are The Deck’s player ratings:

India

  1. Sanju Samson (WK) – 4/10

16 (7); got his side off to a quick start with two 6s and a 4 in the first overs but then pulled Wood straight into deep square leg’s hands

2. Abhishek Sharma – 10/10

135 (54), 2/3 off 1 over, 1 catch; the first (and only) 10 rating of the series. Played one of the most destructive T20 innings in recent years at a strike rate of 250 and also dismissed Carse and Overton in the space of five balls. Caught Duckett off Shami for India’s first wicket

3. Tilak Varma – 6/10

24 (15), 1 catch; involved in a 115-run partnership with Abhishek, who hit most of the runs, and also took a catch but could have go on and made a half-century

4. Suryakumar Yadav (C) – 2/10

2 (3), 1 catch; yet another poor innings from the skipper who will need runs in his next series despite a convincing 4-1 victory

5. Shivam Dube – 9/10

30 (13), 2/11 off 2 overs; increased India’s run rate even more with a fast and powerful innings before having Salt caught behind with his first ball and also bowling Bethell

6. Hardik Pandya – 3/10

9 (6), 0/23 off 2 overs; smashed one 6 over mid-wicket but then hit another straight to Livingstone at deep square leg and was expensive with the ball

7. Rinku Singh – 3/10

9 (6); got out early when given LBW against Archer

8. Axar Patel – 3/10

15 (11); small contribution to a 35-run partnership with Abhishek but was then run out off the penultimate ball of the innings searching for a two

9. Mohammed Shami – 8/10

0 (4), 3/25 off 3 overs; got Ducket for a golden duck and finished off the game with back-to-back wickets of Rashid and Wood

10. Ravi Bishnoi – 6/10

0 (1), 1/9 off 1 over; picked up the wicket of Brook in his only over when Chakravarthy took a good catch in the deep

11. Varun Chakravarthy – 8/10

DNB, 2/25 off 2 overs, 2 catches; had Buttler and Livingstone both caught in the deep off the first balls of his first and second overs. Also took good catches to dismiss Brook and Carse

England

  1. Phil Salt (WK) – 9/10

55 (23), 2 catches; was the only England batter to show any sign of getting anywhere near India’s total and couldn’t have done much else with the team collapsing around him. Took an excellent high, running catch to get rid of Yadav and also caught Varma

2. Ben Duckett – 1/10

0 (1); softly hit Shami to cover on his first ball to end a below-average series

3. Jos Buttler (C) – 2/10

7 (7); partly miscued a hit off Chakravarthy’s first ball to long-off and walked off after dropping his bat

4. Harry Brook – 2/10

2 (4); swept Bishnoi towards deep square leg where Chakravarthy took a good catch running in

5. Liam Livingstone – 3/10

9 (5), 0/29 off 2 overs, 1 catch, 1 run out; smashed Chakravarthy high in the air to be caught in the deep and was also smashed around by Abhishek and Varma with the ball. Did take a good catch and run out however

6. Jacob Bethell – 3/10

10 (7); came in at 68-4 and saw three teammates depart within three overs. Was bowled swinging when the game was already over

7. Brydon Carse – 8/10

3 (4), 3/38 off 4 overs, 1 catch; England’s best bowler as he dismissed Varma, Yadav and Dube and wasn’t too expensive compared the most of the bowlers. Caught Bishnoi off the last ball of India’s innings

8. Jamie Overton – 1/10

1 (3), 1/48 off 3 overs; absolutely hammered around the ground with the ball and has massively underperformed with the bat all series

9. Jofra Archer – 2/10

1* (2), 1/55 off 4 overs, 2 catches; was slightly suprising to see him not given a rest and he ended up being hit around expensively. Took two fairly simple catches

10. Adil Rashid – 2/10

6 (6), 1/41 off 3 overs, 1 catch; not his best game by far with the ball despite being the one to finally dismiss Abhishek. He did take a well-judged catch at fine leg to dismiss Dube

11. Mark Wood – 7/10

0 (1), 2/32 off 4 overs; along with Carse was one of only two bowlers to come away with some credit as he had Samson and Pandya caught at deep square leg and remained economical in the circumstances
