There could be a major shakeup in Cardiff City‘s goalkeeping department this window, with Brian Barry-Murphy confirming interest in two players.
The Bluebirds have had a brilliant start to their season in League One, and look like a strong contender to claim the third-tier title under Barry-Murphy, who is set to stay in South Wales following fleeting interest from Strasbourg.
Duo Could Go
However, a few bits of business are expected to happen in Cardiff in the coming weeks, with the former Manchester City academy manager revealing interest in both Jak Alnwick and Ethan Horvath this January.
Horvath returned from his loan at Championship crisis club Sheffield Wednesday in the past week, but is likely to leave in order to secure a place in the United States’ squad for the 2026 World Cup on home soil.
Alnwick, meanwhile, has failed to feature for City this season after being the first-choice goalkeeper during their time in the Championship, having had a disrupted campaign due to personal issues.
Speaking to Wales Online, Barry-Murphy discussed the interest in both of his backup goalkeepers, who are behind Nathan Trott in the pecking order.
“Ethan’s got a lot of interest from a lot of different places. It’s up to him and we’ll support him in whatever he decides is best to find the football that he wants before the end of the season.
“Jak’s been training with us and he’s got quite a lot of interest as well. We’re looking to support him and make sure he does what he feels is best for him and his family.”
Trott has been supported by Matthew Turner this season, with the 23-year-old making the step up to play in eight of the Bluebirds’ games this season, including three in League One.
Exits Best For Both
Ethan Horvath will fancy his chances at a place in the United States’ World Cup squad this summer, and could certainly push for a place in the starting eleven, but needs regular football elsewhere in order to do so.
Faced with an unenviable task at Sheffield Wednesday, the 30-year-old performed admirably and is deserving of more opportunities in the Championship, as proven with his promotion-clinching campaign with Luton Town under Rob Edwards.
For Jak Alnwick, he has fallen behind Nathan Trott in the goalkeeping order, but considering his circumstances, that likely doesn’t matter. Hopefully, the veteran can find himself a new club closer to home.
Losing both goalkeepers will likely not hinder Cardiff City for the rest of the season, with Matthew Turner and Daniel Higgs both ready to step up in Trott’s absence.
