A major piece of transfer news is breaking in the League of Ireland with a former Premier League striker reportedly on the verge of signing for Bohemians.
Alan Reynolds’s side are particularly light on forward options, with former Derry City striker Colm Whelan being the only recognised player in that area of the pitch. The new season is set to begin next weekend when Bohs face Shamrock Rovers at the Aviva Stadium.
Misfiring Bohemians Overhaul Forward Options
It was an abysmal campaign for one of the biggest names in the League of Ireland, as Bohemians finished in eighth place, their lowest position since finishing in the same spot in 2016 in the then twelve-team division.
They heavily relied on Dayle Rooney for output as the winger finished top of the club’s scoring charts with seven goals and reached double figures in terms of assists.
Their tally of 39 goals was the second-fewest in the top flight, and the overhaul has commenced in the post-season transfer window.
The three main senior options in attack have all departed. James Akintunde has joined FC Haka while Alex Greive and Filip Piszczek have also moved on.
The trio combined for a tally of just seven goals in the League of Ireland Premier Division last season. The only arrival to date has been that of 24-year-old Whelan, who played a bit-part role for Derry City, where he scored one goal in ten appearances in 2024.
Former Premier League Forward Set to Revive Career in League of Ireland
It may be almost unheard of for a player who scored six Premier League goals in 11 starts just five years ago to be on the verge of a move to the League of Ireland, but that appears to be the case.
According to Pete O’Rourke, former Sheffield United and Bournemouth forward Lys Mousset has agreed to join Bohemians after impressing during a recent training spell at the club.
The player last played a Premier League match in May 2021 but has been without a club since January 2024 and has seemingly chosen the ever-growing League of Ireland as the place to kickstart what had appeared a promising career.
The 28-year-old was once a regular for the French under-21 side and scored goals against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and a winner against Arsenal in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.
If the forward can retain his match fitness, he will undoubtedly be one of the star attractions in the top flight. He played a total of 99 Premier League matches in his career, scoring nine goals, and he is exactly what Bohemians need to improve their poor showing in front of goal from last season.
