Europe Awaits as Former Lincoln City Star Returns Home

Ireland v Bulgaria

A piece of major transfer news has been confirmed today as former Lincoln City star Daniel Mandroiu has agreed to return to League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers after two successful seasons with the League One club where the attacking midfielder scored 15 goals and provided 10 assists in 65 appearances.

The Dublin native returns to the Republic of Ireland after three prolific seasons in the Irish top flight that yielded 50 goal involvements in 90 Premier Division matches.

Danny Mandroiu’s Impact at Lincoln City

The Imps were just off the back of a 17th-place finish in the third tier when Mark Kennedy took charge in the summer of 2022. Lincoln City finished in 11th place in 2022/23, where Daniel Mandroiu identified himself as an exciting prospect. The former Bohemians star scored six goals and provided four assists with only top scorer Ben House providing more goal contributions in the squad.

The attacking midfielder took some time to break into the starting line-up before impressing on the right wing with goals in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday and in a 1-0 win away to Barnsley. The former Ireland under-21 international played various roles, including the left wing and central midfield across his 25 appearances.

He ranked first for shots per game and efforts inside the penalty area at Lincoln City and was fouled 1.2 times on average per game, highlighting his threat in forward areas. The player still had areas to work on but displayed his greatest attributes in the 2023/24 campaign.

His total of eight goals and six assists was an improvement on the previous season and despite some impressive performances in wide areas, Daniel Mandroiu played at his highest level in the centre of the pitch. The 25-year-old ranked first for shots per game at Lincoln City in 2023/24 and in the top two for key passes per game.

He averaged 1.3 tackles per game and 0.9 interceptions to highlight his defensive abilities but it is higher up the field where he makes his biggest impact and he will be a major addition to League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers. He may work his way back into consideration for the Republic of Ireland international squad after failing to get off the bench during a 4-1 win in Andorra in 2021.

Heimir Hallgrímsson is limited in options when it comes to creative attacking midfield players that can take the team forward and he could do much worse than the former Lincoln City player. The new Ireland manager has reportedly targeted players in the League of Ireland ahead of his side’s 2025 schedule.

Shamrock Rovers Add Star For Upcoming European Campaign

The Hoops face PAOK this week in the Europa League playoff round and should they lose to the heavily-fancied Greek side, they will drop into the Europa Conference League’s newly revamped league phase. Qualification to this stage is a major boost to the League of Ireland side, with Irish sides often struggling to progress this far in European competitions.

The arrival of Mandroiu is a major boost to Stephen Bradley’s side, who have struggled domestically, finding themselves out of the FAI Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Bohemians and are in fifth place in the League of Ireland Premier Division, ten points behind leaders Shelbourne with 11 games to play.

Shamrock Rovers have won the last four league titles but are unlikely to overcome the current deficit to Damien Duff’s side but will embark on a European adventure that is crucial for the financial rewards, with the Irish top-flight often struggling to compete with other major domestic leagues across Europe.

Ireland’s most successful club have a plethora of players that can provide a creative spark with Mandroiu joining the likes of Graham Burke, Jack Byrne, Dylan Watts and Conan Noonan in Shamrock Rovers’ squad. They appear well-placed to embark on their European adventure and will have eyes on a strong finish in the League of Ireland season to ensure qualification for Europe in 2025.
