Clubs across both League One and League Two are believed to be considering signing former West Ham and Oxford United attacking midfielder, Marcus Browne on a free transfer.
Browne was one of four players to be released by Oxford United after their play-off triumph.
Browne had an injury-stricken campaign last season
West Ham United Academy product, Marcus Browne, recorded over 100 appearances for Oxford United across three spells with the U’s, although his final season with the club was heavily impacted by injuries.
Browne started all four of Oxford United’s League One fixtures at the start of the 2023/24 season, although the attacking midfielder suffered a worrying hamstring injury with former Oxford United manager, Liam Manning, explaining to BBC Sport: “We are not going to see Marcus for a few months.
“We have depth and we have options. Marcus’ injury is an unfortunate part of the industry, players will pick up injuries and miss periods of time, but it opens the door for other people”.
It took until December the 12th for Browne to be handed his first minutes back from injury, only for the 26-year-old’s hamstring to become injured yet again, sidelining Browne for a further four months.
Browne could only pick up a handful of minutes upon his second injury return of the season as Oxford United clinched the League One play-off title, leaving the U’s to release Browne upon the conclusion of his contract.
League One and League Two sides are circling Browne
Marcus Brown is yet to find a new home following his release from Oxford United with little to no rumours of the ex-Middlesborough man being close to signing any deal as a free agent.
However, Football Insider have announced that Browne doesn’t have a shortage of suitors with sides in both League One and Two considering approaching the 26-year-old.
It is yet to be revealed which clubs exactly are weighing up a move for the attacking midfielder, although a deal wouldn’t be sensitive to the summer transfer deadline due to Browne being a free agent.
Browne could provide a lower EFL with Championship and League One experience
Despite being just 26 years old, Browne has no shortage of experience, so far enjoying a career spanning from stints with Premier League clubs to League One sides.
Whilst the majority of Browne’s career has been spent with Oxford United, the midfielder initially progressed through the ranks of West Ham United’s academy, although the exciting prospect only made a singular senior appearance for the Hammers.
Browne impressed on loan at Wigan and Oxford United while still on the books at his boyhood club, attracting interest from both Rangers and Celtic in 2019, according to GOAL.
Middlesborough instead signed the Hammers academy product that summer where Browne accumulated just shy of twenty Championship appearances.
Browne has also racked up over 100 League One outings in his career and could provide a lower end EFL side with some top-quality creativity and experience.
