League One – Promotion, Play-offs and Relegation

League One

There are just two matches remaining in the League One season and whilst Birmingham City have already secured promotion as champions, the race to join them in the Championship next season is an intriguing one and could take a major twist this weekend.

Going in the opposite direction are Shrewsbury Town, but the identity of the other three relegated sides is still unknown, with five sides still in danger of making the drop into League Two, with games this weekend looking decisive.

Here we look at the current state of play at both ends of the table, which teams still have something to play for and the key fixtures which will determine their fates over the next couple of weekends.

Birmingham up- who will join them?

Birmingham City went into the Easter weekend with the title already secured, being crowned champions on 12 April after Wrexham drew with Wigan Athletic, four days after Birmingham’s win over Peterborough had clinched promotion.

The race for the second automatic spot is an intriguing one. Wrexham and Wycombe swapped places twice over the weekend and it is the Welsh side that currently hold second place with 86 points to Wycombe’s 84. However, Charlton are hovering just behind with 82 points.

Wrexham and Charlton meet at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday evening, with Nathan Jones’ side having taken 16 points from their last six games knowing they could cut the gap to just one. Wycombe travel to Leyton Orient knowing that defeat for the Chairboys could see Wrexham clinch promotion with a win.

Mathematically Stockport County are still in the automatic promotion race on 81 points and their form matches Charlton’s, but with two of the sides above them playing each other and one guaranteed to gain points, it would be difficult to see Dave Challinor’s men getting the second automatic promotion place.

Straight battle for final play-off spot

Whoever misses out on automatic promotion is assured of taking three of the spots in the play-offs, leaving one spot up for grabs- and it is a straight fight between Leyton Orient and Reading to extend their season.

Mathematically Bolton Wanderers are still in the race, but they are six points adrift and with a vastly inferior goal difference, so Steven Schumacher’s side look set for another season in the third tier.

Orient and the Royals are level on 72 points, with Orient currently the right side of the line on goal difference. Both sides face tough games on Saturday lunchtime as Orient host promotion chasing Wycombe, while Reading travel to relegation threatened Bristol Rovers.

On the final day, Reading are at home against Barnsley, while Leyton Orient are on the road as they take on Huddersfield Town. It seems likely that the battle for sixth place will go right until the final whistle.

Shrewsbury down- who will join them?

Shrewsbury’s relegation was confirmed on Good Friday after Burton Albion drew with Exeter City. Later in the day Salop were beaten by Wigan. Cambridge United are five points adrift of safety and will be relegated on Saturday if they fail to beat fellow strugglers Burton Albion.

The Brewers are on 43 points, just outside of the relegation zone and above Bristol Rovers on goal difference. Crawley Town are next on 40 points and the Sussex side could go down this weekend if they lose to Northampton and either Burton or Bristol Rovers avoid defeat.

A point would not be enough to save Crawley if Burton Albion or Bristol Rovers win, while a win for both would drag Mansfield back into trouble if they lose to Birmingham City on Sunday. At least one relegation place will be decided on the final day.
