Championship side Blackburn Rovers have agreed a deal with League One side Barnsley for the transfer of one of their youngsters, according to reports.

The Tykes are preparing for another season in League One, having missed out on promotion after being defeated in the end-of-season play-offs. They have brought in Darrell Clarke from relegated Cheltenham Town, to replace Neill Collins, who was sacked late into the 23/24 season.

They have already secured the signings of Conor Hourihane, Marc Robers, Connor Barratt, Jackson Smith and Matthew Craig and now reportedly look set to add talented 20-year-old Georgie Gent on a permanent deal, according to reporter Elliott Jackson.

The former Manchester City youth moved to Blackburn in 2019 and his current deal is set to expire at the end of the 24/25 campaign. He is yet to make a senior appearance for the Championship side but did spend last season on loan at Motherwell in the SPFL.

The left-back made 31 appearances for the Scottish side, scoring twice and assisting on five occasions.

A big season for Barnsley

Last season could have gone disastrously wrong for the Tykes, after appearing to be comfortable holding a spot in the play-offs they nearly through it all away allowing an in-form Lincoln City to take the final spot. However, Champions Portsmouth did them a favour and defeated the Imps.

This season Darrell Clarke has taken over, having been unable to save Cheltenham Town from their relegation. However, the league looks far stronger than last season with relegated trio of Birmingham City, Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town all keen on ensuring their stay in the third tier is short.

There is also the small matter of the sides that missed out on promotion last season, Peterborough United and Bolton Wanderers that will both have felt like they have improved ahead of the new season as well as ambitious Wrexham, Stockport and a new-look Charlton Athletic all targeting top spots. It may be more difficult than in previous years to secure a promotion-contending spot.
