Charlton Athletic haven’t experienced the dream start some of their supporters anticipated this season, but could things be about to worsen with news that one of their players is attracting January interest?
Nathan Jones’ side cruised into the third round of the FA Cup at the weekend with a strong performance against League Two title-chasing Walsall, courtesy of goals from Matt Godden, Tyreece Campbell and a brace from Gassan Ahadme.
However, when it comes to their League One form, the club have won just one of their previous six matches, though they did draw three of them. This has left them 12th in League One, finding themselves five points off the play-off places.
But, could one of the Charlton players find themselves moving on to a new chapter in the January transfer window?
Charlton man linked with exit
As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, League One leaders Wycombe Wanderers are targeting a January move for Charlton Athletic defender Lloyd Jones.
The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2024/25 campaign and has experienced limited first-team minutes under Nathan Jones so far this season.
Jones (Lloyd), would add further experience at the back for the Chairboys which would help take them over the line in their quest to earn automatic promotion back to the Championship.
How has Jones fared this season?
The defender was a regular feature for Charlton Athletic in League One last season, up until March before missing the remainder of the campaign.
He kicked off the current campaign by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory against Wigan Athletic and followed that up with impressive performances against the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town.
In the league alone this season, Jones has made ten appearances for Charlton Athletic, helping to keep five clean sheets but he hasn’t featured for the club since early October when they ended Birmingham City’s unbeaten league start.
Is Wycombe the right move?
The Chairboys have had an outstanding start to their 2024/25 campaign, finding themselves losing just one of their last 20 matches in all competitions which came against Premier League giants Aston Villa.
However, despite having plenty of talent at their disposal, the addition of an experienced centre-back to boost their defensive options and help some of the younger players would have a positive effect on circumstances on the pitch.
Whether Charlton agrees to offload him remains to be seen, but with his contract coming to an end – they certainly have a decision to make.
