This weekend’s League One fixtures produced some big results and standout individual displays, earning spots in our Team of the Week for those who made the biggest impact. Highlights included Plymouth Argyle’s convincing 5-2 win over Cardiff City, AFC Wimbledon’s 3-1 victory against Bradford City, and strong showings from Lincoln City, Leyton Orient, and others in tight contests across the division.
GK – George Wickens – Lincoln City
Wickens, who faced criticism at Lincoln last season, has become influential in the Imps’ success this season, now only a point behind league leaders Cardiff City. He achieved his 12th clean sheet of the season, demonstrating his strong shot-stopping ability and commanding presence alongside seasoned professionals like Sonny Bradley and Tendayi Darikwa, making him the only goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet this weekend.
RWB – Ilmari Niskanen – Exeter City
Exeter City, currently without a permanent manager, secured a 3–3 draw against Peterborough United at London Road. The 28-year-old Finnish right wing-back delivered an impressive performance, registering two assists and taking his season tally to ten, despite the team’s inconsistent form in recent weeks.
RCB – Isaac Ogundere – AFC Wimbledon
In his first season in League One, Ogundere has been ever-present for the London outfit and has played a major role in the Dons’ fight for survival. The 3-1 win over Bradford City saw him assist wing-back James Tilley, while also earning Man of the Match for a dominant display in Johnnie Jackson’s side.
CB – Mathias Ross – Plymouth Argyle
The 25-year-old Dane has had a rocky start since arriving from Sparta Prague, but his goal in Plymouth Argyle’s 5-2 win over Cardiff City showed exactly why he is so highly rated. Comfortable on the ball and dominant in the air, he looks like a key figure as Plymouth Argyle push for a play-off place.
LCB – Eoin Toal – Bolton Wanderers
The Wanderers skipper has been a commanding presence at the back under Steven Schumacher, even popping up with an important goal against Blackpool. However, the 2-2 draw means their gap to second-placed Lincoln City has stretched to ten points.
LWB – Jack Diamond – Stockport County
The former Sunderland man grabbed two assists in the 4-2 win over Wigan Athletic, setting up both Adam Sidibeh and Kyle Wootton as the Hatters capitalised on a nine-man opposition. Diamond has now been instrumental this season, registering ten League One goal contributions as Stockport strengthen their grip on a top-four spot.
CM – Lewis Wing – Reading
Despite a poor result for the Royals, the 30-year-old once again showed his quality with a pivotal goal away at Port Vale. Sitting third in the League One assist charts with nine, he is proving why higher-level clubs continue to monitor him.
CM – Ryan Ledson – Huddersfield Town
The former Preston man has started every game under Liam Manning and scored his second of the season in the 2-1 win over Barnsley. His consistency in midfield has helped the Terriers cement their position as play-off hopefuls.
ST – Jayden Wareham – Exeter City
Two of his goals, both assisted by Ilmari Niskanen, were composed finishes into the left side as he showcased his clinical edge with an astonishing eight-minute hat-trick. With 11 League One goals since his summer move from Reading, he has been one of the Grecians’ brightest sparks.
ST – Aribim Pepple – Plymouth Argyle
A statement win over league leaders Cardiff City saw Pepple score twice and also assist strike partner Lorent Tolaj in a dominant attacking display. His growing partnership up front is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous in the division.
ST – Lorent Tolaj – Plymouth Argyle
In his first season at this level following a reported ÂŁ1 million move from Port Vale, Tolaj has been a revelation in Devon with 11 League One goals. Despite an inconsistent campaign for the side, his finishing and movement have made him a standout performer.
