League Two side AFC Wimbledon are in positive talks with former Charlton Athletic and Swindon Town goalkeeper Lewis Ward following his departure from the Addicks.
Ward became a free agent following a short spell at The Valley, joining in January as additional cover from Swindon Town. He failed to make an appearance but did make the bench on three occasions.
The 27-year-old has also had spells with Exeter City, Swindon Town (twice), Aldershot, Forest Green Rovers, Reading, Sutton united, Northampton Town, Hungerford, Fylkir and Portsmouth as well as his spell at Charlton. He has, to date, 63 League Two appearances, and 24 National League apearances
The news, first reported by the South London Press, and confirmed by The Deck’s own sources. He has also represented Swindon Town, Exeter City and Forest Green Rovers in the fourth-tier play-offs in his career.
The news, first reported by the South London Press, and confirmed by The Deck’s own sources suggest that the League Two club have held positive talks with the goalkeeper with regards to a potential deal.
The Dons are in the market for goalkeeping additions after Alex Bass returned to his parent club Sunderland and Nik Tzanev was released.
Alongside Ward, the publication suggests that Crystal Palace goalkeeper Owen Goodman is set to join the club on loan.
A solid addition for the League Two club?
Ward is, for the want of a better phrase, a safe pair of hands. He has been trusted by a number of clubs as their number two and has always stepped up to the plate when asked.
He has experience and is perhaps looking for a more permanent home after a period of three clubs in just over two years (Swindon, Sutton and Charlton, as well as Swindon again).
He is tall, with good reach and will be a quality addition, whether he comes in as a first choice or second.
Ward is also fantastic with the community, he has volunteered his time to help the local Swindon area throughout his time there.
