Doncaster Rovers are reportedly pursuing an ambitious transfer swoop for fan favourite Billy Sharp, following his departure from Championship side Hull City.
The veteran striker has experienced successful stints with Sheffield United and LA Galaxy but struggled to make an impact in the Championship last season and now finds himself as a free agent.
Sharp had a successful stint with Doncaster between 2010 and 2012 before moving onto sides like Southampton and Leeds United as well as a brief loan stint with Doncaster in 2014.
How did Sharp fare last season?
After signing for LA Galaxy in August 2023, Sharp ended the MLS season in strong fashion scoring six goals in 12 league outings before returning to England upon the expiry of his contract.
He was quickly snapped up by Liam Rosenior at Hull City in an attempt to secure a top-six finish for the Tigers.
However, in his 13 outings, Sharp failed to contribute a goal or assist and found himself as a free agent for the second time in six months with Hull also missing out on a top-six finish.
Now, journalist Alan Nixon has confirmed that Doncaster Rovers are trying to land the 38-year-old once again this summer.
Why is Sharp adored by Doncaster?
During his time with the League Two side, Sharp made over 100 appearances, with his goal record quickly winning over supporters.
He scored 45 goals whilst providing 16 assists for Doncaster and also became a fan favourite based on the loyalty he showed during his initial two-year spell with the club.
Doncaster Rovers twice accepted bids for Sharp from Southampton and Leicester City for the forward but he turned both moves down himself in order to remain with the club.
However, he did eventually sign for Southampton in January 2012 for an undisclosed fee.
Although, it now appears that Sharp could be set to return to Doncaster Rovers around a decade after he last featured for the football club.
