The 2023/24 League Two season is almost at an end, but aside from the play-off battle there is still one relegation place left and it’s being battled out between two clubs…
Forest Green Rovers have already become the first side to be officially relegated down to the National League after an extremely difficult season, but which side will be joining them in the National League?
Currently, Sutton United looks destined to return to the National League unless the final day springs an unlikely alteration which would instead see Colchester United go down.w
Danny Cowley’s side could have secured their survival in mid-week, but despite taking an early lead, they were heavily beaten by an in-form Doncaster Rovers in a result that kept Sutton safe for the meantime.
I have already analysed the League Two play-off race, which you can check out here.
With that being said, let’s dive into what both teams have to do to stay up…
Sutton United
Beginning with the side that is more likely to go down, Sutton United need a miracle to keep their place in the EFL secure, but football is always full of surprises…
On the final day of the season, Sutton United will travel to fourth-placed side MK Dons, knowing they need a big win to give themselves a fighting chance of retaining their football league status.
For the club to avoid the drop, they need to win by at least four goals and hope that Colchester United lose.
Colchester United
As for Danny Cowley’s Colchester, despite their season not going as planned, they only need a point to secure their status although a defeat would be enough provided Sutton doesn’t win.
In a fixture that is being shown live on Sky Sports, Colchester United will host play-off chasing Crewe Alexandra, with both sides having plenty to play for on the final day.
To confirm their place in League Two next season, Colchester only need a point.
Who do I think will be relegated from League Two?
The final day of any season is always full of surprises and I don’t think League Two will be any different. This is because I have a feeling that Sutton United may beat MK Dons considering Mike Williamson’s side has nothing left to play for.
However, I don’t think it will be enough as I am convinced that Colchester and Crewe will play out for a goalless draw, knowing it will guarantee both sides their pre-match objectives.
Readers, who do you think will be relegated from League Two on Saturday afternoon?
