League Two Title Hopefuls Battle for 21-Year-Old Southampton Man

Southampton

League Two duo Walsall and Salford City are set to battle it out on and off the pitch as they aim to secure promotion and a 21-year-old defender from Championship side Southampton. The January transfer window is already kicking into gear, as sides look to add to their squads as we head into the second half of the season.

The Saddlers, despite leading the league for much of the season, find themselves occupying third place behind surprise leaders Bromley and Ian Holloway’s resurgent Swindon Town. Salford City are just behind in fourth, level on points with Matt Sadler’s side after 24 games.

The two sides, despite impressing, have struggled to maintain a high goal difference, with Karl Robinson’s side particularly struggling due to their high goals against tally. Their 31 goals conceded is the third highest outside of the bottom eight teams which, will likely cause concern amongst the club’s staff.

Walsall’s issues are primarily at the other end of the pitch, with the joint second lowest number of goals scored in the top half of the table. However, a more solid defence could prove the difference.

Can Southampton’s Zach Awe be the Answer for Walsall and Salford City?

Both sides, according to FLW are interested in Championship side Southampton’s Zach Awe, with both Walsall and Salford reportedly submitting offers for a permanent deal.

The 21-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for the Saints, largely featuring in the Premier League 2. He spent a period on loan with Accrington Stanley in the 2024/25 season in League Two, making 27 appearances and scoring one goal before returning to his parent club due to injury.

With the player failing to transition into the first team, he may be tempted to leave in the pursuit of minutes.

Will Zach Awe be a Success in League Two?

It is always difficult for a Premier League academy player to find their footing after leaving the top-flight youth setup. It may be tempting to try and stay as high as possible, with the Championship often being a destination for players.

However, with the money available and high stakes at risk, managers often cannot risk giving minutes to youth or developmental players or they may well lose their job if it goes wrong.

This leads to players wasting some of the most fundamental years of their career waiting for their chance. Zach Awe is a quality player and has shown his ability at youth level on a consistent basis. He is now being offered the chance to go and build a solid career and work his way back up again with two teams who are vying for promotions and titles. Whilst no player is ever guaranteed minutes, he will have a far better opportunity than if he were to stay and fight for a spot at Southampton.
