What did we learn from Fleetwood Town’s victory over Carlisle United?

On Saturday in League Two Fleetwood Town travelled to Brunton Park and added to Carlisle United’s woeful start to the season by coming away with a 3-2 win in an eventful game.

A review of the game

Charlie Adam’s side started very confidently and on the front foot, their attackers were making runs that were creating a lot of space in the Carlisle United defensive line and after 10 minutes they got their reward when Danny Mayor danced his way through a static Carlisle defence to slot home the opener.

Things got even better for Fleetwood in the 19th minute when again the Carlisle defence was less than convincing as Ronan Coughlan gave the away side a two-goal advantage as a lot of boos could be heard around Brunton Park.

Just before halftime, Carlisle got themselves back into the game after a good run into the box drew a foul and got them a penalty which Charlie Wyke calmly slotted home.

Carlisle had their best spell of the game before and after the halftime whistle which culminated in brilliant play by Dylan McGeouch as he played the ball through for Charlie Wyke to get his second of the game and Carlisle’s deserved equaliser.

Charlie Adam then made a triple substitution and the game turned back in Fleetwood’s favour as the ball fell to Danny Mayor for his second of the game and what proved to be the match-winner in the 67th minute.

What did we learn from a Carlisle United perspective?

Managerless Carlisle has struggled to create chances over recent weeks but with Archie Davies and Cameron Harper crossing balls into the box and being more direct for the target men upfront, there was a lot more intent to their attacking play.

Dylan McGeouch in midfield was arguably the best player on the pitch before he was taken off in the 67th minute which could have been for fitness issues because he hasn’t played many minutes this season. His piece of play to set up Wyke for Carlisle’s second goal was incredible and something Carlisle had been lacking so far this season.

What did we learn from a Fleetwood Town perspective?

In the first half in particular the runs of the frontmen Coughlin and Graydon to allow space for Helm and Mayor to run in to, worked to perfection. They were pulling the Carlisle centre backs out of position at will at times.

The two wingbacks Mackenzie Hunt and Carl Johnston were a threat for the majority of the game and never stopped running.

The former Plymouth Argyle and Bury man Danny Mayor was easily man of the match for his two goals and his ability to get on the ball and make things happen for Charlie Adam’s side.

Who’s next for both sides?

Carlisle will want to bounce back and get some vital points on the board next week when they travel to Swindon. Fleetwood will want to build on their win as they travel to Stoke midweek in the Carabao Cup and then they host struggling Morecambe next weekend.
