Lincoln City Linked With Move For Former Championship Defender

Lincoln City are one of four clubs interested in signing former Coventry City defender Todd Kane, according to a report via HITC Sport.

The 30-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving Gibraltar-based side Manchester 62 on New Year’s Day and is the subject of interest from Lincoln City, Peterborough United, Millwall and Middlesbrough.

Kane scored once in six appearances in Gibraltar at the back end of 2023, after joining them following his release by Coventry City. During his time with the Sky Blues, Kane made 41 appearances, contributing to six goals including a wonder strike against AFC Bournemouth.

The versatile defender began his career with Chelsea but has spent the majority of his career out on loan with clubs in the Championship as well as the Netherlands and has made over 250 first-team appearances to date.

Lincoln City currently have fellow Sky Blues defender Jack Burroughs on a season-long loan and he isn’t expected to be recalled by the Championship side.

Kane can operate on either side of defence as a full-back or wing-back and has previously slotted into midfield if required although he’s only featured in that role on four separate occasions.

The Imps are currently 11th in League One, 11 points outside of the playoff places at the halfway point of the season. However, a solid January transfer window could allow them to become dark horses despite the sheer number of injuries that the club have had to deal with including blows to Ben House and Tyler Walker.

Writer’s View

Kane would add a huge amount of experience to the Lincoln City defence and he would already have a working relationship with the likes of Burroughs and Walker, which would allow him to settle quickly.

However, there are a lot of ‘what ifs’ with this deal and it would be a risk for the Imps to pursue the defender given his injury record and lack of first-team minutes.
