Lincoln City have finally landed one of their longest-standing targets, with Josh Honohan set to arrive at Sincil Bank when the January transfer window opens.
The recent Republic of Ireland call-up becomes the latest piece in an increasingly deliberate recruitment jigsaw as the Imps continue to plan not just for the second half of this season, but beyond it too.
City confirmed the move with a brief statement earlier this week, ending months of speculation that first began in the summer. The club said:
“City can confirm an agreement to sign Josh Honohan, who will join the club on the opening of the January transfer window. Honohan’s permanent transfer from the League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers is subject to EFL approval and international clearance.”
Honohan arrives from Shamrock Rovers with an impressive domestic pedigree. A two-time PFAI Team of the Season selection, the 24-year-old leaves Ireland as a league and cup double winner, having become one of the most consistent performers in the League of Ireland over the past two seasons.
Reports in Ireland have suggested a fee rising to €500,000, around £440,000, though it is understood that figure includes add-ons rather than a guaranteed base payment.
Big signing for Lincoln City
For Lincoln, this is a signing that has been building for some time. Sporting director Jez George was in attendance at the FAI Cup final earlier this year, a match that underlined Honohan’s influence at the highest level of Irish football. In a game finely poised at 0-0, his ability to carry a threat from wide areas ultimately proved decisive after Cork City were reduced to ten men.
There will be a short wait before supporters see him in action. Honohan is not eligible for the New Year’s Day fixture against Huddersfield Town, meaning his likely first appearance will come at home to Peterborough United on January 4th. That delay should also allow him time to settle following the conclusion of the Irish season and a minor end-of-campaign injury.
Statement of intent
At 24, Honohan is not a project signing. He arrives ready to contribute now, with the potential to grow further, and his capture feels like a clear sign that City intend to keep moving forward rather than standing still. Signing a current international is a signal of intent, and spending a six-figure fee for Lincoln is big business.
On the pitch, Honohan brings exactly the profile the Imps have been seeking. Primarily a left back, he is equally comfortable operating as a wing-back and has the athleticism to contribute in both a back four and a three-at-the-back system.
