Lincoln City’s Golden Boot Winning Loanee Targeted by Rival League One Side

Huddersfield Town are reportedly leading the race for former Lincoln City and Colchester United loanee Joe Taylor from Championship side Luton Town.

The talented forward is being eyed up by the Terriers after a breakthrough season. He spent the opening half of the season in League Two with Colchester United where he contributed 12 goals in 27 games in all competitions. However, he was recalled in the January window, linking up with Michael Skubala’s new look Lincoln City.

He played a key role in the club’s unbeaten run which saw them narrowly miss out on a spot in the play-offs, scoring 10 goals in 19 appearances and picking up the Imps’ golden boot.

It had been expected that his next move would be to a Championship club, however Luton Town’s relegation from the Premier League complicated matters. For the player to play second tier football next season he would need to either remain with his parent club or make the temporary switch to a side that they would be competing with next season.

The Hatters have taken a careful look at the player over the summer and it would appear as though a loan spell could be the most likely option, opening the door for a League One return.

Huddersfield are leading the pack, but are also targeting Southampton’s Dom Ballard and according to Alan Nixon, the club would be happy to sign either.

Is League One the best option for Taylor?

It is worth remembering that just under a year ago the 21-year-old was just signing for a League Two club. He has had a monumental rise, first with Colchester and then Lincoln City. The worst thing he can do now is make a move that could dampen that upwards momentum. There is no guarantee if he stayed at Luton that he would get the minutes he needs to continue his progression.

However, Luton can’t afford to strengthen a rival in what is looking set to be a tight and competitive Championship season. A return to League One seems like the best option for all parties involved. Do not rule out his former side Lincoln City entering the race following the news of Tyler Walker’s injury.
