It’s been a busy summer for Liverpool in the transfer window. That is set to continue with another arrival from a fellow Premier League club.
The Reds have spent big this summer on signings such as Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.
It’s been a shaky start for Arne Slot’s side so far this season. A Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace was followed by Premier League games against Bournemouth and Newcastle United. Liverpool won both games. However, their performances, in particular the defence, have been questioned. As a result, they are still looking to add to their squad before next week’s deadline.
Liverpool Close To Another Signing
According to the Football Insider, Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Marc Guehi from fellow Premier League club Crystal Palace.
The Premier League champions have already agreed personal terms with Guehi and are close to finalising a fee with Palace. After an initial bid of £35 million was rejected, Liverpool aren’t expected to increase their bid. However, they will make a minor adjustment to the add-ons to get the deal over the line.
Guehi is expected to depart Selhurst Park after the Eagles’ Europa Conference League Qualifier tie on Thursday night. Palace had been holding out for £40 million, with the England international now in the final year of his contract.
Guehi’s Palace Career To Date
After coming through Chelsea‘s academy, Guehi signed for Crystal Palace on a five-year deal in July 2021 for a reported fee of £18 million.
The 25-year-old made 42 appearances in his first season as Palace made it all the way to the FA Cup semi-finals, where they eventually lost to Guehi’s former club, Chelsea. On the way to the final, the centre-back scored goals in wins against Everton and then League Two side Hartlepool United. Guehi also received his first senior England cap in March 2022, after being called up by Gareth Southgate for his impressive Palace performances.
In the following campaign, the defender started all but one of Palace’s games in all competitions. Guehi further solidified himself as an established Premier League centre-back.
The 25-year-old spent several months out due to injury in the 2023/2024 season. However, Guehi was called up to England’s Euro 2024 squad. In England’s run to the final, the centre back was one of the standouts. Guehi started all but one game due to suspension. He assisted Jude Bellingham’s stoppage-time overhead kick against Slovakia in the Round of 16 with a flick-on header.
His impressive performances at Euro 2024 alerted Newcastle United. However, the Magpies had numerous bids rejected by Palace and Guehi was named club captain for the 2024/2025 season. The England international lifted the FA cup trophy after Palace beat Manchester City 0ne-nil in the final.
Is This A Good Move For Guehi And Liverpool?
For Guehi, this is a good move. With Liverpool’s defence looking shaky, Arne Slot is open to reinforcements at the back. Guehi will bring a calm head to Anfield and could strike up a great partnership with either Virgil Van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate.
For Liverpool, this is exactly what they need at the moment; a leader with bags of composure. After conceding six goals in three games so far this season, the Reds will be looking to stop the leak at the back. Guehi will do just that.
