Liverpool defender Joe Gomez’s move to AC Milan has fallen through, as the club has not given the green light for the departure.
The Reds are looking firm favourites to retain their Premier League title after their heavy summer spend, which seems set to continue. The club have already smashed the British transfer record with their signing of Florian Wirtz. Their capture of Alexander Isak is set to do that once more after a dramatic transfer saga.
Player departures have also delivered hefty price tags at Anfield, with Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz bringing in large sums. Jarrell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen also saw a fee which raised eyebrows.
Gomez’s proposed move falling through could be a worrying sign for Liverpool fans hopeful of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. The Palace captain has been centre of attention for a move to the champions for some time now, with Newcastle also embroiled in that saga.
Liverpool Update Jeopardises Marc Guehi Transfer?
While not sanctioning the sale of Gomez could concern fans of the potential Marc Guehi transfer, it may not be the reason. Arne Slot’s side saw off title rivals Arsenal at Anfield yesterday, but saw Ibrahim Konate leave the pitch injured. Even if they were to sign Marc Guehi, they would still need defensive cover, and that may be why. Gomez is one of four senior centre-backs at the club currently, with one being new signing, Giovanni Leoni.
Bringing in Guehi would boost those numbers, but as Gomez can also provide cover at right-back, he would be a face to keep around. The side recently had Frimpong and Bradley injured simultaneously, with Bradley on the bench.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that the deal to the Italian side is currently off. Romano also went on to reveal that the Reds maintain optimism about getting a deal for Guehi over the line. A further update revealed that Milan walked away from the deal. Due to the Reds not approving Gomez to travel after an agreement was reached with the player, they have turned to an alternative.
Does Liverpool Still Need Joe Gomez?
Game time has been limited for Gomez at Anfield, seeing just nine appearances in the league last season. Minutes in the starting eleven would come more easily for him in Italy than this Liverpool side. With the World Cup next year, regular game time would be important for him, as he would be a player hopeful of making the squad.
However, if he is to remain at Anfield as a backup option, it would be safe to assume he misses out on next year’s tournament. The Marc Guehi transfer has been given new hope with Crystal Palace having progressed on a move for Brighton’s Igor. This transfer saga may well be the final nail in the coffin for Gomez’s time as a regular at the champions.
