Premier League Champions Liverpool have beaten Arsenal, Manchester City, Leeds United, Rangers and Nottingham Forest to the signing of an in-demand striker Will Wright from League Two Salford City.
The Gunners were closing in on a deal, having agreed a sizeable £200k transfer fee plus a further £50k add-ons last week. However, Liverpool returned to the negotiation table, prepared to match the amount offered, essentially hijacking the deal.
Liverpool Secure Salford City Target Ahead of Arsenal
Arsenal may have agreed a deal with Salford City, but that didn’t stop a host of other clubs coming in late to try and hijack the transfer. Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Rangers made enquiries whilst Manchester City opted to not pursue the signing.
Now Liverpool, according to the Daily Mail, are set to win the race for the 17-year-old on a three-year deal with a medical scheduled.
Once in a Generation Talent
The level of interest in the youngster demonstrates his talent. Whilst he has yet to firmly break through to the first team he has solidified himself as one to watch. He has made four senior appearances between today and his substitute appearance in the FA Cup against Manchester City.
It once again shows that the EFL can be a breeding ground for talent. With correct funding and good management clubs up and down the country can benefit.
Too often clubs in the Premier League have favoured big money foreign players rather than utilising the best football pyramid in the world. Without the money flowing down through transfers it has left many EFL clubs struggling or talent being wasted.
If the EFL and Premier League can open the flow of players once again, it could benefit the whole system. The Football Regulator will be keen to see more money flowing and this is one positive way to do so.
