Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has implied he wants to exit the club for regular football, according to fourfourtwo.
The 25-year-old is currently the second-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool behind Alisson, but believes he is ready to be a number one. The Anfield based club are currently in the early stages of a new era for the club as Arne Slot attempts to fill the void left by the charismatic Jurgen Klopp. He got off to the best possible start, going unbeaten in the league including a 3-0 drubbing of rivals Manchester United to pile more pressure on Erik ten Hag.
Why Does Kelleher Want To Leave Liverpool?
Whilst on international duty with Ireland, Kelleher spoke out about his ambitions of being a number one. “I’ve made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out,” Kelleher has stated. “My ambition is clear that I think I’m good enough and I want to go out and prove it”.
After coming through the academy at Liverpool, Kelleher has been an excellent deputy to highly-rated Alisson. However, he has only made 47 appearances since his debut during the 2019/20 season.
Liverpool have also recently signed Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, but they have loaned him back to Valencia until next summer. Speaking on this, Kelleher said, “The club’s made that decision to get another goalkeeper and from the outside looking in, it looks like they’ve made a decision to go in a different direction.”
What Happens Next?
According to fourfourtwo.com, Liverpool reportedly rejected a few offers for Kelleher in the summer with clubs such as Wolves, Brighton and Nottingham Forest said to have been interested. As Liverpool sent Mamardashvili back to Valencia for a year, Kelleher would have likely been kept to provide backup for Alisson.
The Red’s number two has a contract until 2026, so a renewal is looking unlikely and a sale in the summer is a likely destination.
With the amount of Premier League clubs that were interested in Kelleher in the transfer window just gone, the Irishman will be able to find a club with ease if he was to depart Anfield.
