Luton Town Rebuffed by League One Promotion Chasers

Luton Town

Luton Town have seen a bid for Wycombe Wanderers star Richard Kone turned down by the third-tier promotion chasers.

Wycombe have been a fairytale story in League One this season, competing with the financial giants Birmingham City and Wrexham. Despite the massive financial difference between the three clubs, the Chairboys are in the automatic promotion places, above the Dragons by three points.

For the Hatters, it is a different story as they battle for survival in the Championship. They have already turned to Wycombe for answers, securing Matt Bloomfield as their new manager.

Richard Kone and the Wycombe Fairytale

Kone’s performance in Wycombe’s story this season is a tale of hard work paying off. In 2019, he was competing in the Homeless World Cup for the Ivory Coast before heading to non-league football. Fast forward to 2025, he has 14 goals in 26 appearances. His goals have helped take the club towards the top half of the table, with a nine-minute hattrick leading the club to three points against Peterborough back in October.

It is no surprise that the club have turned down an offer for one of their key players in the winter window. Pete O’Rourke has revealed that the club turned down a bid for the forward, but it is unclear what the figure stood at. Kone is a standout in League One and the way he has adapted to the EFL has been impressive, showing strong potential for the future.

Bloomfield Has Work to do at Luton Town

Matt Bloomfield has swapped League One for the Championship by joining Luton Town. However, if their form is anything to go by, the Hatters could be bound for the third tier while the Chairboys are still on course for promotion.

The forward department needs improvement at Kenilworth Road. Not only has the side only managed 27 goals in the Championship this season, but no player has reached double figures for goalscoring.

Linking up with Kone again could be the answer that Bloomfield needs at the club, but they are going to need a lot more to turn things around, including defensive options. The side has conceded 47 goals in the league as they sit 23rd and remain without a win in seven games.
