Luton Town Striker Makes Admission Over Future After Latest Goal

Luton Town striker Jerry Yates has admitted his long-term future remains uncertain despite beginning to find form since arriving on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

The forward, who joined the Owls during the January transfer window, has started to make an impact at Hillsborough and added another goal to his tally during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat against Derby County at Pride Park.

The 28-year-old’s early contributions have already sparked discussion among supporters about whether the loan could eventually become permanent. However, the striker himself says the situation remains far from clear.

Loan striker unsure what summer will bring

Speaking after the match, Yates explained that his immediate focus is simply on finishing the campaign strongly with Wednesday rather than speculating about where he might be playing next season.

“Listen, it’s a tough situation, I have got two years left on my contract at Luton.”

The striker only joined Luton last summer after completing a move for a reported seven-figure fee. Despite arriving with high expectations, his return of seven goals in 29 appearances led to the decision to allow him to leave on loan during the winter window in search of more regular opportunities.

Before that switch, Yates had already experienced a number of different spells across the EFL. He began his professional career at Rotherham United after progressing through their youth setup and gained early experience during loans in non-league and League Two football.

A productive period at Swindon Town helped establish him as a reliable goalscorer, and he later moved to Blackpool where his reputation grew further. During the 2020-21 campaign he scored 23 goals in all competitions, helping the Seasiders secure promotion from League One through the play-offs.

That form eventually earned him a move to Swansea City in 2023, where he spent a season in the Championship before further loan opportunities followed, including a campaign with Derby County. His performances there ensured regular minutes and a run of goals as Derby battled to remain in the division.

Now back in the Championship again with Wednesday, Yates believes the club’s supporters have played a huge role in helping him settle quickly.

“I will go back to them in the summer, re-evaluate, sit down and speak. Whether it be with them or whether it be elsewhere, I don’t know yet.”

“But listen, to be playing in front of fans like that every week would be sensational.”

Immediate task

For now, Yates’ immediate task is to continue building momentum during the remainder of the season. If he can maintain his recent scoring form, it will only strengthen the case for a longer stay at Hillsborough.

From Wednesday’s perspective, his impact over the next few months could ultimately determine whether the club pursue a permanent deal. A striker capable of delivering consistent goals is always valuable, and if Yates continues to show glimpses of the form that made him such a prolific scorer earlier in his career, it would be no surprise if the Owls seriously consider keeping him beyond this season.
