With the January transfer window approaching, City could consider signing reinforcements in five critical positions to shore up their squad and stay competitive for the rest of the season.

It’s no news that Manchester City haven’t been in the greatest form lately, losing their last four matches in a row—a slump not seen since 2006 and unprecedented under Pep Guardiola’s tenure. Injuries have heavily impacted City’s season, with key players like Rodri, club captain Kyle Walker, Kevin De Bruyne, Manuel Akanji, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Jack Grealish, Nathan Ake, and Jeremy Doku all sidelined. As a result, City’s depth has been tested, and they’re clearly missing the influence of their regular starters.

With this context in mind, here are five positions Manchester City could target to strengthen their squad in January:

Five players Manchester City could look to sign this January.

Right-Back

The first area City should look at is right-back, where an ageing Kyle Walker has been a loyal servant, winning 17 trophies in his seven years at the club. Despite Walker’s experience, his pace has waned, and his defensive lapses have become more frequent. Although Rico Lewis has impressed in his absence, City still lack a defender who can match Walker’s speed and 1v1 defensive prowess. Micky van de Ven from Tottenham would be an ideal replacement. His quickness suits City’s need for speed in transition, and his versatility as both a right-back and centre-back aligns with Guardiola’s preference for adaptable players.

Defensive Midfield

Next, City need reinforcements in defensive midfield. Rodri’s injury has exposed a lack of depth in this position. While Kalvin Phillips was signed as cover, he hasn’t met City’s standards. Ideal targets for this role include Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad, Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães, or Torino’s Samuele Ricci. As an out-of-the-box option, Moisés Caicedo could be considered. At Chelsea, Caicedo has been strong in key defensive metrics this season: he’s in the 91st percentile for duels, 87th percentile for defensive actions, and 91st percentile for key passes. Although Chelsea are unlikely to sell, Caicedo’s profile would fill City’s defensive needs in Rodri’s absence.

Backup Striker

City are also short in the forward department. Following the departure of Julián Álvarez to Atletico Madrid, City lack a reliable backup for Erling Haaland. Oscar Bobb was seen as a potential stand-in, but with him out injured, City are just one Haaland injury away from a goal-scoring crisis. Haaland has contributed 12 of City’s 22 goals this season, with the next highest tally coming from defensive players Kovacic and Gvardiol with three each. City need a forward who can offer consistent threat in the box and ease the load on Haaland, while Bobb often played as a right-winger when available.

Creative Midfielder

City’s midfield could also benefit from a new addition to recapture the creative magic of the David Silva-Kevin De Bruyne partnership. Ilkay Gündogan’s return hasn’t lived up to expectations, and De Bruyne is now into his 30s. A fresh face in midfield would bring youthful energy and attacking flair. Potential options include Jamal Musiala or Florian Wirtz, who could create a dynamic partnership alongside Phil Foden, allowing Guardiola to build a midfield that balances creativity and tactical discipline.

Left Wing

Finally, the left wing may need reinforcement. Rumours persist about a potential rift between Jack Grealish and Guardiola, and if true, City might look for a replacement in January. Though unlikely given that Doku, Savio, and Nunes have been options in this role, fans would welcome a winger with elite finishing and high offensive output to increase City’s threat up front. Adding such a player could give City the edge they need in attack and create more goal-scoring opportunities across the front line.

In summary, Manchester City’s transfer strategy in January should focus on shoring up depth in these five areas to compensate for injuries and maintain competitiveness. With targeted signings, City can revitalise their squad and stay on course for a successful season.
