Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool are set for an intense transfer battle over Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi according to reports.
Arne Slot’s side were close to securing the in-demand international in the summer but their attempts fell at the final hurdle after Crystal Palace were unable to secure a replacement.
There were reports at the time that manager Oliver Glasner threatened to leave or not sign a new deal if he was sold without a suitable option coming into the door.
However, Guehi’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026, which has alerted a number of sides to his availability.
England’s World Cup Campaign Could Halt Move
England are set to take part in the World Cup next summer, with Guehi likely to be part of the squad. He is currently playing regularly for Crystal Palace and will not want to ruin his chances of getting onto the plane by reducing his playing time.
Whilst a move in January is possible, it is more likely he will wait until after his international duty to make a firm decision. If Manchester United are keen, as TBR suggest, they will likely need to secure European and ideally Champions League football.
As time progresses it is expected that more clubs, such as Real Madrid, and even Manchester City may join the race.
“Best Signing Since Fergie”
Premier League Lowdown host and Journalist Alex James spoke to The Football Deck regarding the link.
“It would be a genius bit of poaching from (Manchester) United and possibly their best recruitment post Fergie (Sir Alex Ferguson) given their recent history of signings.”
“It would be a Strange choice from the player given the other options of suitors available for him but he would certainly be their best defender by a distance and could be the man to help them return to glory.”
What Does This Mean for Harry Maguire?
Harry Maguire is another player out of contract this summer. There have been reports that suggest contract negotiations are ongoing, but his future is certainly up in the air.
The talented De Ligt has all but taken his starting position in the side. The emergence of talents such as Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven could also further reduce playing time.
If Guehi joins, is there still a place for Maguire at Manchester United?
