Manchester United Get Fitness Boost But Suffer Setback In Spain

Manchester United Women head into their first European knockout tie without a key match-winner from the league phase.

The Reds travel to Atletico Madrid for Thursday night’s 20:00 GMT first leg in Spain, with a 19-player squad that includes three winter recruits and a notable return in defence.

United lose a proven difference-maker for the first leg

Manchester United’s preparations for a landmark night have been complicated by the absence of Fridolina Rolfö, who scored the winner when the sides met earlier in the campaign.

Rolfö has been one of United’s most reliable performers since arriving in the summer, and her end product has been a consistent feature of the season. She found the net in October’s meeting with Atleti, settling a tight contest that finished 1-0 in United’s favour, and her overall numbers underline why her absence matters.

The club confirmed the Swede is unavailable for this one, joining two other recent absentees in missing out on the trip.

“The squad’s fine, in good shape. Only Frido had a little knock from the weekend, so she’ll miss out on this game. Leah [Galton] and Tooney [Ella Toone] are the only other absentees. Everybody else is fit, in the squad and ready to go.”

United will still believe they have enough quality to take a positive result back to Leigh for the second leg on Thursday, 19 February, but losing a player who has already decided this specific match-up shifts the balance of the selection debate for Marc Skinner.

Winter recruits in line for European debuts

While the headline is the setback, the travelling group also reflects how United have strengthened mid-season. January additions Hanna Lundkvist, Lea Schuller and Ellen Wangerheim have all made the trip and could be handed their European debuts, offering Skinner fresh options across the spine and the forward line.

There is also a welcome boost at centre-back. Millie Turner is included after injury disruption earlier in the season, adding experience and leadership to a defensive unit that will be tested by an Atleti side playing at home in the first leg.

United’s midfield group contains several in-form options too, with Julia Zigiotti Olme among those looking to take responsibility in a game that could be decided by moments rather than momentum. It is the sort of tie where clean execution, set-piece sharpness and game management can matter as much as fluency.

What it means for the tie

Rolfö’s absence removes a direct route to goal and a player comfortable in big European moments, whether operating high on the left or dropping deeper when the game state demands it. For United, the challenge now is to spread that threat across the front line and make sure the first leg stays within reach before the return fixture, where the Reds will hope to welcome back options and let the tie open up on their own turf.
