Manchester United are working on a deal to sign Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 23-year-old currently plays for Royal Antwerp in the Belgian top flight. Personal terms are almost agreed between the club and player, with just the fee needing to be agreed between both clubs.Â
Lammens Close To United Move
After Andre Onana was dropped completely from the matchday squad in Sunday’s loss to Arsenal, United are in the market for a new goalkeeper. Altay Bayindir replaced Onana in the defeat to The Gunners. However, it was his mistake that led to the game’s only goal.Â
Lammens had a standout season for Antwerp last season, as the club finished in a Europa Conference League spot. By mid-February, the keeper had saved four penalties in all competitions.Â
The Belgian is widely viewed in Belgium as the long-term replacement for Thibaut Courtois, and Antwerp want at least €20 million for Lammens.
This would be a cheap signing for United compared to the combined ÂŁ132 million spent on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo earlier in the window.Â
This is a low-risk, high reward signing for United, if they can complete the deal.
Their goalkeeper position has been a problem since the departure of David De Gea in 2023. After the Spaniard helped the Red Devils finish in a Champions League place, he left Old Trafford when his contract expired.Â
Lammens stands at six-foot four-inches and has the potential to be as good as Thibaut Courtois, who currently plays for Spanish giants, Real Madrid.
After the recent goalkeeping struggles at Old Trafford, the Belgian doesn’t have much to do to win over the United fans. A few penalty saves and a commanding presence from defensive set pieces could be all it takes for Lammens to cement himself as a fan-favourite, just like David De Gea was during his 12 years at the club.
Similarly, it doesn’t take much to come under intense pressure from the United fanbase. Onana and Bayindir have been under intense speculation after their mistakes have cost the Red Devils points.Â
