Middlesbrough Facing Possible January Setback

Middlesbrough are facing a potentially major January setback, following reports that loanee Matt Targett could be recalled by Premier League giants Newcastle United next month.

Under the new-management of Kim Hellberg, Middlesbrough have gone from strength to strength in the Championship and continue to close the gap on leaders Coventry City.

However, one of their standout performers so far this season could be set to leave the side next month, threatening the possibility of ‘rocking the boat’.

Middlesbrough facing January setback

As reported by journalist Dominic Shaw, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has confirmed the club are considering recalling Middlesbrough loanee Matt Targett in January.

The 30-year-old has been an integral part of Middlesbrough’s defensive line so far this season since arriving in the summer, utilising his Premier League experience to try and help his side return to the top flight.

However, Newcastle are currently deeply involved in an injury crisis defensively with the likes of Dan Burn out injured.

How important has Targett been for Middlesbrough?

Using his Premier League experience wisely, Targett has been an integral part of Middlesbrough’s defensive setup so far this season.

He’s made 18 appearances across all competitions so far this season for the Championship promotion hopefuls and contributed to three goals.

Targett’s contributions alone have earned Middlesbrough five points, which without them would have placed them ten points behind Coventry.

How big of a blow would this be?

In short, the departure of Matt Targett would be a big blow for Middlesbrough, but they are in a position currently where they can attract players to replace him.

Unlike loan spells when clubs lower in the table lose players, Middlesbrough are flying high in second and are knocking on the Premier League door.

Players are going to want to play for that team. Therefore, whilst Targett would be a big blow for Middlesbrough, they have the advantage of being an attractive club for targets to sign for.

Therefore, controversially there is an argument to say that despite how key Matt Targett has been for the club, he is replaceable.
