Middlesbrough have completed the loan signing of young talent Luke Thomas from Leicester City until the end of the season, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s website.
The 22-year-old joins Middlesbrough from the Foxes to try and aid their push to reach the Championship playoff places this season once again.
Who is Luke Thomas?
Thomas is a product of Leicester’s academy and in 2020, he’d go on to make his debut for Leicester against Sheffield United. He made 56 appearances for Leicester between 2020 and 2023. Most recently, Thomas was on loan at Sheffield United but left after falling out of favour at the Premier League strugglers.
His spell in Sheffield
He’s spent this season out on loan at Sheffield United in the Premier League. He made 12 appearances, and considering Sheffield United are rock bottom of the league, and have conceded 10 more than the second-worst team in the league (51 goals in total), he’s still averaged a 6.5 rating, having a few outstanding performances despite his side losing, a real standout player in what has been a very poor side this season.
His best performance of the season was in a 2-0 defeat away at West Ham back in September, being Sheffield United’s best player on the pitch. Thomas is able to operate as a full-back or a wing-back, which has suited him very well and offered that little bit more of an attacking threat.
Pushing for the playoffs
Middlesbrough currently sit 11th in the Championship under Michael Carrick following their difficult start to the campaign. However, the side are just three points outside of the playoff places in what’s been a difficult but entertaining campaign thus far.
Writer’s View:
I think this is an absolutely outstanding piece of business from Middlesbrough, a quality defender is exactly what they need right now as they have been conceding far too many goals this season, so bringing in Thomas is a very smart decision.
He’s played regularly for a side in the league above and is not afraid to get up the pitch and join in with the attacks if he needs to. I can’t see anything going wrong with this loan and now they will be better able to make that push for the playoffs.
