Former Tottenham and Aston Villa midfielder, Joshua Onomah, has reportedly impressed while on loan with League One promotion hopefuls, Blackpool.
Onomah has been without a club for the past year following the expiry of his deal at Preston North End.
Onomah has previously trialled at Stoke City
Once hotly tipped Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Joshua Onomah, found himself in the football wilderness last summer and has yet to find his next home.
It looked as though the ex-Fulham man was set to agree a deal with Championship side, Stoke City, after impressing whilst on trial with the Potters last summer.
TeamTalk claimed at the time that the then 26-year-old was expected to be offered a deal at Stoke after his successful trial period, but a deal failed to materialise and the player remained without a club for the entirety of the 2023/24 season.
Blackpool have been impressed with Onomah
Joshua Onomah looks keen to climb back onto the EFL pyramid and has undergone a trial period with League One side, Blackpool, this summer.
The 27-year-old creative midfielder has been training with the Seasiders towards the end of pre-season, according to the Blackpool Gazette, and even featured for a half against Accrington Stanley in a behind-closed-doors friendly game.
Interim boss, Richard Keogh, has been positive about Onomah’s impact
Whether or not Onomah will be offered the chance to permanently join Blackpool remains unclear with the club currently undergoing a managerial search following the sacking of Neil Critchley after just two league games.
The Tangerines’ interim boss, Richard Keogh, has certainly been complimentary of Onomah however, stating:
“Josh has been great, he’s worked really hard. When you spend so long out of the game, you have to put a programme in place for him to physically be in place to show his best self – that’s only fair for the player.
“We know what a good player he is, it’s clear to see what he’s added to the group when he’s trained, and it’s helped the younger players.
“It’s good for him to be around us. He’s been good for us, but we’ve been good for him as well.” (Blackpool Gazette)
Onomah could bring Premier League experience to League One
Should Blackpool recruit Onomah permanently this summer it could be viewed as a significant recruit, considering the Championship interest in the midfielder just last summer.
Despite only being 27, Onomah in terms of footballing experience would be one of the maturer players within the Tangerines’ squad, having played frequently in both the Championship and League One.
Onomah developed in Tottenham’s Academy alongside the likes of Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp, making 32 appearances for the Lilywhites before being utilised in a deal for Ryan Sessegnon.
Onomah’s experience on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa earned him a regular spot upon his arrival at Fulham, although the young midfielder failed to retain such a regular spot when the Cottagers achieved promotion to the Premier League.
Fulham eventually outgrew the need to have Onomah among their squad and let the midfielder join Preston North End in January of 2023, but as mentioned previously, the ex-Spurs player has failed to find a new club since.
