Championship side Millwall are set to sign Rangers striker Zak Lovelace on a permanent deal.
According to Will Scott, Millwall and Rangers have agreed a fee for the 19-year-old to head back to South London.
Lovelace joined the Scottish side from Millwall back in July 2022 at the age of just 16 years old.
Zak Lovelace to return to his boyhood club.
Born in South London, Lovelace joined Millwall at the age of 13 from the youth team of non-league side Glebe after he scored 43 goals in 15 appearances, helping Glebe with their progression in the Kent Youth League that year.
He made his Millwall debut in December 2021, when he came off the bench in Millwall’s 1-0 win away to Coventry City.
He then made three further appearances for Millwall that season and was promised more game time in the following season, Millwall confirming this themselves.
Once his contract was up at Millwall, he didn’t accept a new deal and joined Rangers; however, now he is heading back to South East London following reports that he was homesick and wanted to return to London.
Was joining Rangers the wrong option for Lovelace?
Overall, no, it wasn’t the ‘wrong’ option. However, if he stayed at Millwall in the first place, it would have been more beneficial to him.
Saying that, by joining Rangers, he has racked up appearances in the Europa League.
It is a great deal for the player and Millwall right now, with Millwall signing another asset to come in and shine, and the player will be integrated into the first team as well as being given opportunities in the Lions’ academy side.
At the time of Lovelace heading to Scotland, Millwall didn’t have the reputation they do now with Academy products. I.e., Romain Esse.
There is still a lot of work to do with the deal.
With all of this said, we must stress the deal is not done yet. There is still a lot of work to do for the deal to go ahead; although a fee has been agreed, no contracts are signed just yet.
