Young Millwall gem Romain Esse is said to be attracting interest from multiple Premier League clubs. One club in particular continue to hold an interest however they appear to be turning their attention elsewhere.
According to the South London Press, the 19-year-old has attracted interest from Nottingham Forest, AFC Bournemouth, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Newcastle United, with Crystal Palace also said to be interested as reported earlier in the Championship season.
Journalist Sami Mokbel is also reporting that French side AS Monaco are monitoring Esse.
Romain Esse has been a pivotal part of Millwall’s successes this season.
Esse has been a superstar in the Millwall team this year, racking up four goals and one assist in 23 EFL Championship appearances—five goals in all competitions, thanks to his match-winning goal against Portsmouth in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
He is one of, if not the most, creative players in the Millwall side, with an average XG of 1.98 and an XG on target of 3.65. He isn’t just a creative player, though; since Neil Harris returned as head coach, Esse has visibly improved his defensive play and has won 191 duels and recovered the ball 109 times this season.
Contract release clause may see Esse leave in January.
The Millwall academy graduate could depart The Den in January, and Millwall would have no say in it, apart from trying to convince the starlet to stay—with multiple reports suggesting Esse has a release clause in his contract. But it is unclear how much that release clause really is.
Crystal Palace chief spotted attending Millwall matches.
Crystal Palace Sporting Director Dougie Freedman was seen attending matches at The Den, which confirmed reports that Palace were interested in the teenager.
However, Millwall’s rivals appear to be turning their attention to other targets amid interest from other sides after they had seen a bid for Liverpool’s Ben Doak, who is currently on loan at Blackburn Rovers, rejected at £15 million.
Millwall director gave supporters an update before the window opened.
In an interview with the club, Millwall’s Director of Football, Steve Gallen, reassured supporters that they didn’t want to sell players in January but accepted the fact that if the team and players are doing well, there will be keen interest in them.
Millwall fans will now face a long month’s wait to see if they will be able to keep their young ‘starboy.’
