Bradford City manager Graham Alexander has backed Manchester United loanee Ethan Wheatley after the striker missed a golden opportunity on his debut against Luton Town.
The 20-year-old joined the Bantams earlier this month after being recalled from a season-long spell with Northampton Town, where he scored three League One goals in 22 appearances. His outing at Kenilworth Road was his first since 29 December, and although the result ended in defeat, Alexander was encouraged by what he saw from the young forward.
Wheatley is a product of Manchester United’s academy, having joined at the age of nine before making his Premier League debut in April 2024. That appearance made him the 250th academy graduate to represent United’s senior side, and he has also featured for England at under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-20 levels.
Alexander was quick to highlight the striker’s maturity despite his age.
“Sometimes you get young players and they look like men, because of their stature and everything like that. You think of them like they’ve got 200 games under their belt and they’ve had loads of experience.
“But then you see his date of birth and his game time, you think, actually, he’s like a first or second-year pro, which is extremely difficult for a player to come straight into a team.
“But for me, the biggest thing was that he was there to have that opportunity. He was on the last line, he was looking to make that run and he didn’t shy away from taking the shot.”
The Bradford boss also pointed to Wheatley’s reaction after the miss as a key positive, insisting mentality is what separates promising forwards from productive ones.
“You can review it, go back and (think), ‘I should have done this, should have done that.’ But it’s gone. “The best goalscorers, the best players, they make a mistake or they don’t fulfil what they should have done.
“They just put it to bed and they go on with the next action and I saw that in Ethan’s game last week.
“There’s going to be down times in-game or there’s going to be a mistake. One hundred per cent there’s going to be a mistake from every individual but don’t carry it around with you – and I didn’t see that from Ethan.
“I think he’ll have many more opportunities to score goals between now and the end of the season.”
Bradford now prepare to host Peterborough United, with Wheatley pushing for further involvement as he looks to make an impact between now and the end of the campaign.
Wheatley should succeed
There is always noise when a Manchester United loanee arrives in League One, particularly one with Wheatley’s academy pedigree and England youth background.
He was valued at Northampton, but has gone to Bradford for top-end experience, and to play in front of a big crowd, preparing him for life in the upper echelons of the game.
This feels like a sensible, measured loan rather than a vanity signing. If he keeps finding space on the last line and showing the mentality Alexander described, the goals will follow, and this debut miss will quickly fade into irrelevance.
