Paul Warne’s MK Dons are preparing an ambitious move for a Championship defender from one of his former sides.

MK have made some impressive signings this summer. Callum Paterson, Aaron Collins and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing have joined Warne’s side in the window.

The signings have all clearly had an immediate impact at the club. They’re currently 3rd in League Two and are yet to lose a game in the league.

Their transfer business isn’t done yet, though. Warne’s side are in talks with Championship side Derby County over a move for defender Kane Wilson.

The deal would be a permanent move for Wilson to MK, bringing an end to his two-year spell at Derby.

Wilson’s 2024/25 Season

Wilson leaving might be a shock to some, given that he played a key role for Derby County last season. He started 26 of his 33 appearances last season, averaging 74 minutes per game. For his performances last season in the league, Wilson received an average rating of 6.71 from Sofascore.

Along with helping Derby avoid relegation from the Championship, he helped the team keep four clean sheets. Individually, he finished the season with 0.5 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, four balls recovered, and two clearances per game.

Wilson also chipped in with two goals and one assist, as well as creating six big chances and having 0.7 key passes.

He’s yet to appear in the league this season for Derby County after having an operation on his knee over the summer.

Is This a Good Move?

MK Dons’ transfer window business has certainly shown their ambitions of getting out of League Two and back to League One. They’ve already taken Mendez-Laing and Paterson from the Championship straight to League Two. If they can get Wilson to do the same, it might be the most impressive.

For Wilson, this move also makes sense. Derby County have signed 21-year-old right back Max Johnston. This puts Wilson’s game time at risk, especially given his steady return to first team action because of his surgery.

He could likely find himself a League One club, maybe even a Championship side. But MK are a team back on the rise, and it’s likely an exciting prospect to any player at the moment.
