Morecambe Football Club have endured a tumultuous summer. There were times when it looked like the National League club might cease to exist, but they were saved at the 11th hour after the Panjab Warriors’ takeover was completed.
In recent days, the club have added a raft of new players to their roster. The latest of these new additions is former Arsenal man Miguel Azeez, who will wear the number eight shirt for the Shrimps, according to the club’s official website.
Who Is Miguel Azeez?
The central midfielder spent a long time in the Arsenal academy, joining the club when he was just five years old. He signed a professional contract with the Gunners and made one first-team appearance for the North London giants in the Europa League in 2020.
His first loan spell in men’s football came with Portsmouth in the first half of the 2021/22 season. Azeez initially joined Pompey on a season-long loan, but he struggled to make regular first-team appearances and was recalled in January after just 10 appearances for the club.
After spending the rest of the campaign with Arsenal’s youth team, the midfielder went abroad for his next loan move, joining UD Ibiza in the summer of 2022.
Once again, he failed to play consistently in the Spanish second tier and was recalled after 10 appearances in the first half of the season. He was loaned to Wigan Athletic for the second half of the campaign, but played just twice for the Latics.
He left Arsenal in the winter of 2024 to join Atlético Baleares, a Spanish third division club for whom he made 14 appearances and scored one goal.
Last season, Azeez moved to the Greek second tier, playing for recently relegated PAS Giannina. Once again, he made 14 appearances and scored a single goal before departing the club.
Where May He Fit In At Morecambe?
Despite a flurry of new arrivals before their first National League game against Altrincham, Ashvir Singh Johal’s side are still incredibly light in terms of squad depth.
The Shrimps were only able to name five substitutes against the Robins, all of whom were under 21 years of age. Whilst Azeez is not much older, he is 22 years old, he already has a lot of experience, having played in three different countries and in some incredibly competitive leagues.
Azeez will likely be competing with Yann Songo’o and Paul Lewis for a place in Morecambe’s starting XI. Whilst he may have more technical quality than the duo, he will need to find both fitness and form quickly if he wants to usurp one of the experienced duo.
