Moyes in advanced talks for Everton return

Everton

Everton have stepped up talks to bring back former manager David Moyes as they look to fight off relegation. They currently sit. Despite playing fewer games, they are only one point ahead of the relegation zone.

The club sacked Sean Dyche after the side failed to win any of their last five Premier League matches, only scoring one goal in this time. According to reports from Football Insider, managerial discussion took place overnight. Moyes, 61, could make a sensational return to Goodison Park in its final season as the club’s home ground.

Why did it all go wrong for Dyche?

Everton had a strong season last year under Dyche, 51, as he helped the side to safety with 40 points despite being handed a total of eight points in deductions given to the club due to their failure to meet the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) of the Premier League.

However, this season’s results have taken a turn for the worse, and after 19 games, they are sitting on a tally of 17 points. Everton have played a game less than the rest of the teams around the relegation zone, but the Toffees game in hand is against their Merseyside Rivals, Liverpool, who sit top of the table.

Fans’ joy of survival over the last number of seasons has turned to discontent as the club have only managed to score one goal in their previous five matches whilst also only picking up three points from draws in that time. They now only sit one point above safety with half of the season left to go.

Why are they choosing Moyes?

Moyes left the club initially in 2013 on excellent terms. He moved to Manchester United to be the long-awaited replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson. In his final 10 seasons at the club, he finished inside the top eight on nine occasions. His best season was a fourth-placed finish in 2004-05, earning a space in the Champions League qualifying round.

Despite not being given an entire season at Man United, he has still found success at clubs like West Ham. The Scot spent two spells at West Ham. His first spell ran from November 2017 to May 2018, and his second from December 2019 to May 2024.

He succeeded in the second spell by lifting the Europa Conference League in 2023. Despite a ninth-placed finish last season, it was reported that West Ham parted ways with the manager to make a change in the style of play at the club. They finished the season with 74 goals conceded; only the three relegated sides conceded more.

One name was continuously linked with the Everton job: Jose Mourinho. David Ornstein confirmed, however, that the current Fenerbache boss was not in contention.

Everton came through the FA Cup third round with a 2-0 win against Peterborough. With Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman taking charge on the day of Dyche’s sacking they left it late to confirm the victory with a second goal.

They take on Aston Villa on Wednesday evening and will look to pick up some much needed points. A fast managerial appointment could see Moyes take his place in the Goodison dugout for that game.
