National League Promotion Chasers Keen On Sunderland Goalkeeper

Sunderland goalkeeper Adam Richardson is drawing interest from National League play-off chasers FC Halifax Town.

Any potential move will have to wait until the summer, when the 22-year-old’s contract expires at the Stadium of Light.

Left Behind After Promotion

A permanent move away from Wearside appears the most likely outcome for the young goalkeeper. Sunderland have surpassed almost everyone’s expectations this season, sitting comfortably in mid-table despite a recent wobble in form. The Black Cats’ place in the Premier League next season is almost assured, barring an unprecedented collapse with eight games remaining.

That unfortunately means there is no future in the north-east for Richardson, through no real fault of his own. First-team opportunities no longer exist, with just a handful of cup games at this level versus in the Championship last year. Robin Roefs is currently injured, but has been excellent in his first campaign in England. Melker Ellborg has adequately stepped up in recent times, while Sunderland can also call on the experienced Simon Moore in reserve.

That begs the question of where Richardson fits in at the Black Cats; the short and harsh answer is that he doesn’t. Formerly of England’s youth setup, the Northumberland-born keeper penned his first deal with the club six years ago, having progressed through their academy. Further contract extensions in 2022 and 2023 came amid interest from Premier League sides, before an injury set back his chances of first-team involvement on a pre-season tour that summer.

Where’s Next?

Loans at Hebburn Town and Blyth Spartans provided that much-needed first-team experience at the back end of 2024. He has also made a handful of youth team appearances in the past two campaigns. But it was nowhere near enough for a player of his age, having fallen further down the pecking order due to the arrivals of other goalkeepers on Wearside. Richardson, therefore, needs regular first-team football to further his development, and Alan Nixon has reported that the Shaymen are looking to sign the goalkeeper.

He has reportedly been training with the National League outfit in recent weeks, and a permanent deal to join the West Yorkshire side seems like the most likely scenario at this moment in time. That deal may depend on which division Halifax are playing in next year, as they occupy the final play-off position in the fifth tier. They are under pressure from Southend United, who have three games in hand, a much superior goal difference, and are only one point behind. Town will have a keen eye on the Shrimpers’ home encounter against leaders Rochdale this evening.
