Newcastle United Key Departure Confirmed After Missing Start of the Season

Newcastle United

Premier League Newcastle United have had a transfer window to forget, with high profile disagreements with Alexander Isak, missing out on targets such as Benjamin Sesko and Ekitike to Manchester United and Liverpool. But with the window hurtling towards its conclusion, there is still time for business to be done.

The Alexander Isak situation may be taking the headlines with the statements and record-breaking figures being talked about but one player is set to depart the club this summer to the Championship.

Matt Targett Agrees Deal to Move to Middlesbrough on Loan from Newcastle United

Matt Targett was at one stage being talked about as a potential Manchester United  Luke Shaw replacement. However he soon found himself at Newcastle United in 2022, joining from Aston Villa.

He has struggled to make a huge impact at the club, with injuries and other signings limiting his game time. In the 2024/25 campaign he was only able to make two Premier League appearances and three FA Cup.

But now, according to Alex Crook he is set to depart to join Middlesbrough on loan for the season. This will bring his contract that expires in 2026 to its end allowing him to prove himself to earn a deal elsewhere.

Middlesbrough Swoop for Premier League Man

Middlesbrough have started well in the Championship this season. They have six points from six in their opening two games. Beating Swansea City and Millwall without conceding. They have also brought in the likes of Adilson Malanda, Sontje Hansen and Abdoulaye Kante amongst others.

Rob Edwards will be hoping to continue his side’s momentum against Norwich City, who themselves will be wanting to push for a return to the Premier League.

Targett will provide experience and a brilliant technical ability to the Boro line-up. That is if he can get up to speed with the fast and physical Championship after a lack of football.
