With just one month left on his contract, Callum Wilson has entered talks with Newcastle United over the possibility of a new contract. The striker has been at the club since 2020; however, despite the potential extension, Wilson will have attracted attention from other Premier League sides.
Newcastle have had an undoubtedly successful season, finishing in a Champions League spot and winning the Carabao Cup; their first trophy in over 56 years.
Callum Wilson’s season has been less successful, with the striker spending extended periods dealing with injuries. The 33-year-old has failed to score in his 18 Premier League appearances, with his only goal of the season being a 26th-minute strike against Birmingham City in the FA Cup.
Potential new contract for Callum Wilson
Although having a lacklustre season in the Premier League, playing just 18 matches and starting only two, David Ornstein has shared the possibility of Callum Wilson extending his stay on a new, primarily merit-based contract.
Eddie Howe has sung Wilson’s praises, describing the striker as “Someone who epitomises the spirit that got us to where we are.”
Howe also pointed to the striker as being a “leader in the dressing room”, with the praises pointing towards him being an important figure to have around for morale.
Callum Wilson would likely look for other opportunities elsewhere if his contract is based on performance. This being said, the temptation and rationality of staying at the now Champions League club is understandable considering the unreliability of Wilson’s fitness.
Newcastle fans may also be keen to see Callum Wilson move on, with Alexander Isak netting 23 goals and other young strikers coming through the ranks. William Osula is one player that supporters are keen on seeing, with the 21-year-old now often seen as a more viable backup striker over Callum Wilson.
Possible moves to newly promoted Premier League sides
Despite the possibility of a renewal, there will probably be potential moves elsewhere for the veteran striker. Championship victors Leeds United have been linked with strikers over the last season, including names such as Emmanuel Latte Lath and Evan Ferguson.
Current Leeds frontman, Joel Piroe, picked up the Golden Boot following his 19-goal Championship season. Nevertheless, many fans doubt his presence will be sufficient for the Premier League. Callum Wilson could provide the experience that the Whites need for the top division.
Burnley and Sunderland will also have an interest for similar reasons. Josh Brownhill has been a leader on the pitch for the Clarets, netting 18 goals, but as his contract is up in the summer, it remains to be seen whether he will return to Turf Moor.
Sunderland gained promotion through a play-off victory against Sheffield United on Saturday. Wilson Isidor leads their line and could have the right qualities for the Premier League, but there are doubts over his final product, as the striker ended the season with only 14 goals and assists.
There is also the possibility of Callum Wilson returning to his boyhood club, Coventry City, who fell just short of promotion following a semi-final defeat to Sunderland in the Championship play-offs. This transfer seems more unlikely as the striker might not be willing to drop to the second tier.
It remains to be seen whether Callum Wilson will stay at Newcastle United or look elsewhere. However, with just one month left on his contract and the transfer window opening next week, his future will be revealed very soon.
