Newcastle United are lining up a blockbuster move for a Brazilian winger this summer.
The Magpies secured their return to the Champions League, finishing in the fifth and final qualification spot.
To prepare for the Champions League, they have already started identifying potential targets. One new name Newcastle United have been linked with is Real Madrid’s winger, Rodrygo.
Newcastle United want to sign Rodrygo
Fichajes have reported that the Magpies are ready to spend over £170 million this summer to add further depth and quality to their side.
One of the marquee signings could be the Brazilian winger Rodrygo. The Spanish news outlet have said Real Madrid would be willing to accept around £67 million (€87 million) for the 24-year-old. This is despite his release clause of around £838 million (€1 billion).
The signing would be a clear sign of Newcastle United’s intention to compete both domestically and continentally.
Rodrygo’s struggles for Real Madrid
The 24-year-old played 30 times for Real Madrid this season in La Liga, starting 22 times and averaging 65 minutes per game. In those appearances, he received an average Sofascore rating of 7.4.
Despite his high average rating, things likely haven’t gone as the Brazilian would have liked this season.
He has just six goals and five assists in the league, but his last goal or assist came back in January in Madrid’s 3-0 win over Real Valladolid.
Will he join Newcastle United?
Real Madrid appear happy to let Rodrygo leave this summer, despite the winger featuring a lot this season and still only being 24.
It’s not yet known how Xabi Alonso feels about the winger. If he wants to keep him, that will likely put to bed any rumours about his future.
It’s a deal that makes sense for Newcastle United. They are back in the Champions League and the attacker has lots of experience in the competition and could be a key player for them.
Jacob Murphy’s form this season has been a blessing for Eddie Howe. Right wing looked like a potential weak area for the club, but Murphy stepped up and had arguably the best season of his career.
If the Brazilian does join the Magpies, it’s unlikely he’ll want to play backup to Murphy. The Englishman might find his spot gone, even after his good season.
